Sagittal section of the brainstem. The riMLF and the PPRF act as brainstem centers for the generation of saccades. The riMLF mediates vertical
saccades and the PPRF mediates the horizontal. Lesions of these regions or their cortical input pathways impair the saccadic actions necessary for
volitional vertical and horizontal gaze. PPRF = paramedian pontine reticular formation; riMLF = rostral interstitial nucleus of the medial longitudinal
