Chapter 6 Study Guide Wednesday, November 6th, 2013 *Percent- a fraction in which the denominator is 100. Percent is another name for hundredths. The percent symbol “%” means “out of 100.” *Converting a decimal to a percent: Example ( I Do) 0.05 When converting a decimal to a percent you must move the decimal point TWO places to the right and then add the “%” sign to the end of the number. So, when the decimal number 0.05 is converted to a percent it becomes 5% Second example ( I Do) 0.54 becomes 54% (You Do) Lesson 6.1 on Wednesday, November 6th 0.05 ______________ 0.34 _______ 0.01 ______________ *Converting a percent to a decimal: Example (I Do) 8% When converting a percent to a decimal you must move the decimal point TWO places to the LEFT and ADD a decimal point. Also, you must remove the “%” sign. So, when the percent 8% is converted to a decimal it becomes 0.08 (You Do) Lesson 6.1 on Wednesday, November 6th 17% __________ 4% ________ 24% ____________ Thursday, November 7th, 2013 *Converting a decimal to a fraction: Steps: 1. Read the decimal to yourself. 2. Place the number over the correct Place Value Position (PVP). 3. Simplify the fraction, if needed. Example (I Do) Example (I Do) 0.08 Follow the steps. 0.34 Follow the steps Answer 08 100 Answer 34 100 *Converting a fraction to a decimal: Note: For fractions with denominators that are factors of 100, you can write equivalent fractions with this denominator. Example (I Do) 1 10 Answer 0.1 Example (I Do) Problem (You Do) 3 4 4 10 answer _______ 1 4 answer __________ Answer 0.75 *Converting a percent to a fraction: Steps: 1. Drop the % sign 2. Put the number over 100 3. Simplify the fraction, if needed Example (I do) Hamsters are 22% on the chart. Step 1: 22 (I dropped the percent sign.) Step 2 22 100 Step #3 if needed 11 50 Problem (You Do) dogs are 40% on the chart. Convert the percentage (40%) of dogs to a decimal number. Answer _____________ *Converting a fraction to a percent: There are 2 methods… Method #1 1. Divide the numerator of the fraction by the denominator. Decimal point and zeros need to be added. Use 3 places. 2. Move your new decimal 2 places to the right. 3. Add a percent sign. Method #2 1. Check denominator to see if you can multiply it by a number to get 100. 2. Multiply numerator and denominator by that number. 3. When fraction has a denominator = to 100 drop the 100. 4. Add percent sign. Example (I Do) 3 4 Follow the steps given above for method 2 (Step 1) 75 100 so, you scaled up the 4 ( x25) to 100. Then you scale the 3 ( x25) up to 75 75 (Step 2-3) 100 Problem (You Do) (Step 4) 0.75 4 5 SHOW YOUR WORK!!!! Fractions 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 Homework for Thursday, November 7th Decimals 0.08 2 10 Percents 8% 20% 1 2 0.25 3 5 14% 0.10 2% Now, let’s tie it ALL TOGETHER!!! I DO: Write the decimal, fraction and percent for the hundredths model. I Do You Do Decimal: 0.04 Decimal ___________ Fraction: 4 100 Fraction ____________ Percent: 4% Percent ____________ Friday, November 8th, 2013 *Comparing decimals, percent and fractions to each other. Step 1: When comparing a decimal to a percent OR fraction you must first convert to a similarity… Example (I Do) 48% _______ 0.52 I am choosing to convert 0.52 to a percent. After I move the decimal place to the right two places I have 52 and then I add the “%” sign. Now I have 52%. So, 48% is less than 52% Answer 48% < 0.52 Problem (You Do) 0.82 _______ 4 5 *Steps in Ordering Numbers Step 1: Convert all numbers to ONE form. Similar to comparing but you have more numbers. Step 2: Determine if these numbers should be ordered Greatest to Least or Least to Greatest.
