Periodontal (Gum) Disease By: Shanna Deveraux Shanna Deveraux CIS 1020 Final Project What is Periodontal Disease? Periodontal disease ranges from simple gum inflammation to serious disease that results in major damage to the soft tissue and bone that support the teeth. In the worst cases, teeth are lost. Shanna Deveraux CIS 1020 Final Project What is the cause of gum disease? Our mouths are full of bacteria. These bacteria, along with mucus and other particles, constantly form a sticky, colorless “plaque” on teeth. Plaque can be removed by brushing, flossing and using mouth rinse on your teeth. If plaque sits on your teeth long enough if hardens into tartar. Tartar cannot be removed without professional tools by a hygienist or dentist. Shanna Deveraux CIS 1020 Final Project Healthy gums vs. diseased gums Shanna Deveraux CIS 1020 Final Project Periodontitis When gingivitis is not treated, it turns into periodontitis, which means inflammation around the teeth. Inflammation causes pockets around the tooth that become infected. Plaque spreads and grows below the gum line. Bacterial toxins and the body’s natural response to infection start to break down the bone and connective tissue that hold teeth in place. If not treated, the bones, gums, and tissue that support the teeth are destroyed. The teeth may eventually become loose and have to be removed. Shanna Deveraux CIS 1020 Final Project Symptoms Include: Bad breath that won’t go away Swollen or red gums Tender or bleeding gums Painful chewing Loose teeth Sensitive teeth https://www.google.com/search?q=inflamed+gums&biw=1600&bih=763&source=lnms&tbm=isch &sa=X&ved=0CAYQ_AUoAWoVChMI6pbf0YWTxwIVgYuSCh3vwwvv#imgrc=JjjYSx7K0zgygM%3A Shanna Deveraux CIS 1020 Final Project Stages of Periodontitis Stage 1 Stage 2 Stage 3 Stage 4 Gingivitis Inflammation of the gums without bone loss. Early Periodontitis Inflammation of the gums and the surrounding tissues that results in early bone loss. Moderate Periodontitis Inflammation of the gums and the surrounding tissues that results in moderate bone loss. Advanced Periodontitis Inflammation of the gums and the surrounding tissues that results in severe bone loss.
