Zakat
Zakat, one of the Five Pillars of Islam,
is the giving of a fixed portion of
one's wealth to charity, generally to
the poor and needy.

History
Zakat, a practice initiated by Muhammed
himself, has played an important role
throughout Islamic history. Initially,
Muhammed instituted zakat as a
voluntary, individual offering, but
during his lifetime certain forms of
zakat have been declared obligatory.

There are eight categories of people who qualify to receive zakat funds,
according to the Qu'ran:
Those living in absolute poverty.
Those who cannot meet their basic needs.
The zakat collectors themselves.
People who are non-Muslims, to show them the real spirit of Islam.
People whom one is attempting to free from slavery or bondage. Also includes
paying ransom or blood money.
Those who have incurred overwhelming debts while attempting to satisfy their
basic needs.
Those working for an Islamic cause.
Travelers in need.
Zakat may not be given to descendants of the prophet Muhammad, nor may it be
given to parents, grandparents, children, grandchildren, or spouses. It is also
forbidden to disburse zakat funds to organizations that pay salaries to their
employees, or use the money for investments.

Zakat al-fitr
Zakat al-Fitr is charity given to the poor
at the end of the fasting in the Islamic
holy month of Ramadan. The word Fitr
means the same as Iftar, breaking a fast
and it comes from the same root word
as Futoor which means breakfast.

Sadaqah
Sadaqah or Saddka is an Islamic term
that means "voluntary charity".
This concept encompasses any act of
giving out of compassion, love,
friendship or generosity.

Hadith on Sadaqah/Saddka
The Islamic prophet Muhammad:
"We used to sacrifice Atirah in pre-Islamic days during Rajab; so what
do you command us?”
He said: “Sacrifice for the sake of Allah in any month whatever; obey
Allah, Most High, and feed (the people).”

"Saddka extinguishes sin as water extinguishes fire."
"Saddka appeases the Lord’s anger and averts an evil death."
"Give the Saddka without delay, for it stands in the way of calamity."
"The believer’s shade on the Day of Resurrection will be his
Saddka."

Quran on Sadaqah
Sadaqah should be given solely out of love for God, out of the
desire to do good to His creation, as the Quran says about the
righteous:"They give food, out of love for Him (Allah), to the
poor, the orphan, and the slave, saying: We feed you only for
Allah's pleasure - we desire from you neither reward nor thanks.“
Giving Sadaqah will not diminish a Muslim's wealth. It serves as
expiation for sins and yields rewards in the next life. Allah says:
"For those who give in charity, men and women, and loan to
Allah a Beautiful Loan, it shall be increased manifold (to their
credit), and they shall have a liberal reward.”
