INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY® TVSS
Major Standard Change for Surge Protective Devices (formerly known as Transient Voltage
Surge Suppressors)
The primary safety standard for transient voltage surge suppressors (TVSS) has undergone major
revisions in the past three years. Manufacturers must comply with the latest standard by
September 29, 2009. This means all TVSS products listed to the UL 1449 2nd Edition standard
can no longer be manufactured after September 29, 2009. All Surge Protective Devices must be
designed, tested, manufactured and listed to the UL 1449 3rd Edition standard after this date.
The 3rd edition of this important standard was published in September of 2006. Eaton's
Innovative Technology launched its first UL 1449 3rd Edition listed SPD product (XT50/100) in
January of 2008. Innovative Technology received certification for its remaining SPD in May
2009 thus providing a complete line of SPDs to the latest safety standard well in advance of the
required date.
Eaton's Innovative Technology is committed to helping the users of SPDs to understand this
new standard and has a comprehensive seminar and supporting documents.
Surge Protective Devices
Since 1980, Innovative Technology products have solved the most difficult electrical transient
problems for business, industry, government and defense sectors. Now as a part of Eaton
Corporation’s electrical business, we are even better positioned to deliver state-of-the-art
customer solutions.
Why Innovative Technology SPD Products?
TVSS Pioneer
Since 1980, IT has designed and manufactured the leading Surge Protective Devices in the
industry. We hold the patents and intellectual resources that have been leading the way in
transient voltage surge suppression. Innovative Technology products and technologies protect
electrical, data, telecom circuits and electronic equipment from the effects of lightning induced
voltages, external switching transients and internally generated electrical transients.
System Shield
Although external transient surges include lightning strikes, utility grid switching and equipment
action at adjacent buildings are easily recognized high-energy surge events, they only account for
20% of all surges faced by a facility. 80% of surges are the results of internal switching
transients (turning on/off motors, transformers, photocopiers, etc.). Wiring, grounding errors and
surges (also known as transient voltages) are among the most common power quality issues
facing facilities today – resulting in safety concerns, equipment damage and costly downtime.
System Shield is a proven, effective method for total facility protection. This layered approach
protects all of your electrical and electronic equipment, from powerful motors to sophisticated
lighting controls and sensitive computer based controllers.

POWER EVENT MONITOR
The Innovative Technology®TVSS Power Event Monitor (PEM) is integrated into TVSS
devices without increasing the size of the footprint. Mounted on the door inside the TVSS, the
PEM continuously monitors the electrical system while recording power-quality disturbances.
These records help facility managers to pinpoint the source of harmful power events and decide
whether or not to take corrective measures, thus making the PEM a key component of today's
comprehensive power protection solution.
General Features






Works as an integrated device into Innovative Technology Protector Series TVSS
products (80, 160, 300, and 400kA models)
Offers unparalleled surge protection and comprehensive system monitoring
Detects, monitors and reports on a wide array of power quality events
Enables facility managers to pinpoint the source and location of harmful power events,
both internal and external
Enhances system capability without increasing footprint size through direct integration
into the TVSS
Operates efficiently in a wide range of environments, including military, marine,
manufacturing and critical facility applications
The PEM collects real-time data and stores up to 5000 power-quality disturbances. By utilizing
the PEM’s MODBUS IrDA, RTU, or TCP communication capabilities, technicians can instantly
access all monitored and event data by using infrared, RS-485, and wired or wireless Ethernet
technologies. Consequently, whether you are in the facility or at home, all data collected by the
PEM can be easily accessed for analysis.
Communicating with the PEM is accomplished by using Eaton’s PEM Handheld or PEM PC
Interface Software. This software can be downloaded by clicking the corresponding PEM
Software link to the right.

ACCESSORIES
Now with a 10 Year Warranty, the Innovative Technology® TVSS Accessories provide
enhanced functionality for your surge suppression equipment.
SOFTWARE
Power Event Monitor Handheld and PC Software
Eaton Corporation provides free of charge software that provides the ability to monitor and
control a TVSS Power Event Monitor (PEM) using either a Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) or
Personal Computer (PC).
By downloading and installing either the Power Event Monitor Handheld or PC Interface
Software, data that is critical to the efficient operation of your power system can be accessed
without exposing personnel to the danger of arc flash. Data can be retrieved via infrared outside the
arc flash boundary to any PDA equipped with Windows® Mobile software. Or by tying the PEM
into your Ethernet backbone, an operator can access data from anywhere – through your LAN to
a PDA or PC via wireless communications.
With either software package an operator can:




Monitor phase voltages in real time
Display number of recorded sag, swell, and surge events
Retrieve and save the PEM's event history log
Configure the PEM's operating parameters
