Thunderstorms

Form from warm temperatures, moisture, and rising air

Three-stage life cycle

1. Cumulus Stage – dominated by cloud formation and
updrafts

2. Mature Stage – heavy winds, rain, and lightning

3. Dissipation Stage – updrafts stop, winds die down,
lightning ceases, and precipitation weakens
Tornadoes

A violent, whirling column of air in contact with the
ground

Formation – thunderstorm updrafts begin to rotate

Classification – Fujita Scale – F0 to F5
Hurricanes

An intense tropical storm with winds exceeding 119 km/hr

Formation

1. Warm moist air rises, Water vapor condenses, Clouds form

2. As air continues to rise, a tropical depression forms – 37 to 62 km/hr

3. Air continues to rise, Storm builds, Tropical storm forms – 62 to 119 km/hr

4. When winds exceed 119 km/hr, the storm becomes a hurricane
Blizzard

A violent winter storm characterized by
freezing temperatures, strong winds, and
blowing snow

Usually form when an air mass of cold,
dry, Canadian air moves south and
interacts with a warm, moist air mass
moving north from the Gulf of Mexico
