Introduction
Any information provided in this leaflet should be read together with any patient information
leaflets provided by the manufacturer. For further information please refer to the suggested
contacts, listed at the end of this information sheet.
What is the medication for / what are the benefits?
This medication is used to try and manage chronic intractable pain.
How is it applied?
Apply one self-adhesive Butrans patch to a dry, clean area of skin on either the upper arm or
somewhere on the upper body. Avoid any irritated, irradiated, broken areas of skin, scars or
hairy areas.
Press the patch firmly in place with the palm of the hand for approximately 30 seconds, to
ensure full contact is achieved, especially around the edges. This patch provides a continuous
dose of Buprenorphine for 7 days. On the 7 th day remove the patch. Apply a new patch to a
different area of skin – avoid using the same area of skin for a week or so. You can bathe,
shower and swim with the patch on.
How often should it be taken/applied?
The Butrans patch stays in place for 7 days. The patches come in three different strengths:
 ‘5’ Patch
 ‘10’ Patch
 ‘20’ Patch
You will need to see your GP to adjust the strength of the patch.
Do Not exceed the maximum dose – discuss this with your Doctor
It is likely to take 24 hours before you notice any pain control. During this time do not stop
