POLS 7010 Advanced China Studies Course Aims & Objectives: Existing a) To give students an understanding of the origin and development of China Studies from an multidisciplinary perspective; b) To evaluate the state of research and substantive knowledge in the field of contemporary China Studies; c) To examine the works of such noted American China-watchers (including historians, journalists, economists, sociologists and political scientists) as Edgar Snow, John Fairbank, A. Doak Barnett, Ezra Vogel, Lucian Pye, Andrew Walder, Harry Harding and Nicholas Lardy as well as the recent trends in China Studies; and d) To invite guest speakers from various disciplines to broaden students’ understanding of China. Identify and conduct research of policy issues faced by contemporary governments such as economic growth, social inequalities, urban development, environmental protection, and public health, etc. by learning how to effectively use internet search engines for academic and research purposes; 6. Develop writing skills by requiring a briefing memorandum on an appropriate public administration topic; and 7. Develop presentations and teamwork (and learn practical personnel management and coordination skills) by requiring class presentations, graded jointly by class members and by the instructor on the briefing topic.
