Excellence in scholarship, a commitment to diversity, and community service are the hallmarks of the Fulbright Program. In 1946, as the
junior senator from Arkansas, J. William Fulbright introduced legislation to start a new international educational exchange program with
an ambitious goal – to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries. The
Fulbright Program now operates in 155 countries, and has supported over 300,000 students and scholars.
