DEFINITION
The verb signals an action, an occurrence, or a state of being.
Whether mental, physical, or mechanical, verbs always
express activity.
CLASSIFICATION OF VERB
Verbs can be divided according to the job they do in a
sentence as:
• Main and helping verbs
• Transitive and intransitive verbs
• Finite and nonfinite verbs
MAIN AND HELPING VERBS
• Main verb has its own meaning. They tell us some thing
For exa.
Go, read, play, drink, etc…
• Helping verbs have no meaning on their own. They are necessary for the grammatical
structure of the sentence, but they do tell us very much alone .
We use helping verbs with main verb.
Exa. Is ,am, are, were, etc…
TRANSITIVE AND INTRANSITIVE VERBS
• Verbs can be classified in several ways. Some verbs require an object to
complete their meaning.
• ‘She read…’ Read what? ‘She read a story.’
• These verbs that require an object are called transitive verbs. Verbs that
do not require an object are called intransitive
• ‘She is laughing.
FINITE AND NON FINITE VERBS
• Verbs can also be classified as finite or non-finite.
• A finite verb can be the main verb of the sentence. Its form is determined by the number and
person of the subject.
• I work at a bank.
• He works at a bank.
• I have worked with children before.
• She has worked with mentally challenged people.
• Non-finite verbs cannot be main verbs. There are mainly three types of non-finite
verbs: infinitives, gerunds and participle
