Banner Java Issues and Solutions
1. What Java version should I use?
You should be using a version of Java 6 or Java 7 but NOT Java 8.
2. How do I check what version of Java is installed on my computer?
The Java version can be found in the Java Control Panel.
•
Find the Java Control Panel.
•
Under the General tab in the Java Control Panel, the version is available through the About
section.
•
A dialog appears (after clicking About) showing the Java version. (samples below)
3. What should I do if I have Java 8?
If you have Java 8, you should uninstall it (see instructions below).
You may need administrator privileges on the computer to remove programs.
4. How do I uninstall a version of Java?
You may need administrator privileges on the computer to remove programs.
•
Close any open programs you may have running, especially your web browser
•
Click: Start and then Control Panel (depending on your Operating System or
configuration, you may need to click: Start > Settings > Control Panel)
•
Open: Programs and Features (Windows 7)
•
Locate your version of Java in the programs list and then right-click on Java and
choose Uninstall (Windows 7)
•
Reboot your computer when finished.
5. What should I do if I get a Java out of date message?
If you see a message similar to one of the following, you can select Run this time or you can
choose to Update Java. Be sure it doesn’t update to Java 8. (See instructions above for
uninstalling Java 8)
If you see the message below, right click to see the choices.
6. What should I do if I get an Application Blocked or Application Error?
If you receive a Java popup message similar to the examples shown below,
• you have multiple versions of Java installed on your computer or
• the Java version you have is not compatible with Banner.

You probably have to update security settings in your Java Control Panel (see instructions
below) or
Add the URL to the Exception Site List (see instructions below) or
You may have Java 8 installed and need to uninstall it (see instructions above)
You must be an administrator on your computer to perform these tasks.
If you are not an administrator or need additional assistance, please contact your local desktop
support.
Updating Settings/Sites in the Java Control Panel

Close all applications
•
Go to your Control Panel and select Java
•
Click the Security tab
•
Choose Edit Site List
•

•
Add the site you are having Java error messages to this list by clicking Add
Enter the full web address to the list (https://banner.drexel.edu/) then click OK.
The site will display in the exception list as seen below, click OK as your final step.
