OUR HISTORIC THEATER The 5th Avenue Theatre’s breathtaking design was inspired by ancient Imperial China’s most stunning architectural achievements, including the magnificent Forbidden City. Built in 1926 for vaudeville and silent pictures, The 5th Avenue Theatre reigned for decades as Seattle’s favorite movie palace. In 1979, 43 companies and community leaders formed the non-profit 5th Avenue Theatre Association and restored the theater to its original splendor. The 5th Avenue Theatre re-opened in 1980 as Seattle’s premier home for musical theater. The 5th Avenue Theatre gratefully acknowledges our 43 original founders and sponsors. W E L C O M E TO T H E 5 T H FROM THE DESK OF DAVID ARMSTRONG EXECUTIVE PRODUCER AND ARTISTIC DIRECTOR A THRILLING NEW SEASON! W e have recently announced our 2016/17 season of seven thrilling musicals, and invite you to play a critical role: season ticket holder. After all, what is theater without its audience? Our first show is one of the most beloved and enduring of all time: Man of La Mancha, one of the first international “mega musical” sensations. Its thrilling and passionate score is a huge part of the show’s dynamic impact—especially its stirring anthem “The Impossible Dream.” This holiday season, join us “under the sea” for the Northwest premiere of Disney’s The Little Mermaid, inspired by the Hans Christian Andersen story and the animated film. Complete with Academy Award-winning songs by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman, this spectacular production will feature dazzling sets and costumes with special effects that are pure magic. Next, we bring you one of the most hilarious and tuneful hits from the “Golden Age of Broadway”: The Pajama Game. At the Sleep-Tite Pajama Factory, a steamy romance is brewing between the handsome new superintendent and the sassy head of the union grievance committee, until a strike ignites a conflict between management and labor and a battle of the sexes. We continue our annual partnership with ACT—A Contemporary Theatre with the hysterical new hit, Murder for Two. It’s a murder mystery with a twist: there are only two actors, one who plays the detective, and one who plays all of the many suspects. And they both play the piano. It’s musical comedy to die for! Spring will bloom with The Secret Garden. Based on the beloved novel, this 1991 Tony Award-winning Broadway beauty tells the story of ten-year-old Mary Lennox who is sent to live with her reclusive uncle in a gothic mansion on the Yorkshire moors. But when she discovers the key to a neglected garden, Mary brings the weary estate—and herself—back to glorious life. And the music is unforgettable! One of the things we are proudest of at The 5th is our commitment to the creation of new works, and this year features another exciting world premiere! Inspired by the cult film, Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion will take you back to the 1980s and ’90s with a thrilling pop/rock score and a script by the film’s creator, Robin Schiff. We will close our season with the current Broadway smash Fun Home. Based on Alison Bechdel’s best‐selling graphic memoir, this groundbreaking new musical is a refreshingly honest musical about seeing your parents through grownup eyes. It made history as the first show with an all female writing team to win Tony Awards® for Best Score and Best Musical. Subscribers are the lifeblood of The 5th Avenue Theatre, and with 25,000 of them attending productions here annually, we are proud to have one of the largest theater subscriptions in the country. Our patrons love coming back for many reasons—exclusive pre-sales, discounts on additional single tickets, free exchanges if you can’t make your performance and discounted parking at a number of downtown garages. Or, for subscribers who take all seven shows, FREE parking! But more than anything, the reason we hear most often that our patrons become season ticket holders isn’t the incredible perks we offer or the world class customer service they experience from the moment they call the Box Office to the moment they hear a “good night” from our usher staff. It’s the promise of guaranteed nights out on the town. When you are a season ticket holder at The 5th, you have multiple opportunities to look forward to the company of a dear friend or loved one, an incredible meal at one of Seattle’s amazing restaurants and a sensational performance that will have you singing and dancing the whole way home. We hope you will consider joining us for all seven shows next season—a season that will mark the 90th anniversary of this majestic and spectacular theater. In celebration we will be making major improvements including the installation of a new state-of-the-art sound system and an expansion of our restroom facilities. I look forward to seeing you! encore art sseattle.com 5 Creativity CIRCLES Members of the Creativity Circles support the creative arc of the musical theater art form. But a successful Broadway show—and, make no mistake, Kinky Boots is a huge hit—is anything but a niche market—it needs to speak to a wide and diverse audience. Jerry Mitchell says he knew the musical would speak to a lot of people, the moment he watched the film.“I got very emotionally caught up in the story of the fathers and the sons,” he says. “And I thought, ‘well that to me is the nucleus of something really strong,’ because it’s a universal idea for us: how do we measure up in our fathers’ eyes?” Kinky Boots, the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical, was created by a dream team of talented and original artists; pop icon Cyndi Lauper, who won a Tony for her infectious score, four-time Tony-winning librettist Harvey Fierstein, and director/ choreographer Jerry Mitchell, who also took home a Tony for his dances.“Because we’re all different, we brought in what we know and we all worked together to make it right – to make you laugh and cry,” says Lauper.“Harvey is such a good storyteller and so is Jerry. They have a lot of heart and I feel very blessed to be among them.” That’s certainly the way producer Daryl Roth felt when she first saw the film at Sundance in 2006. Within a year, she had optioned the musical rights and brought producer Hal Luftig on board. The two enlisted not only Mitchell, but playwright Harvey Fierstein, who says he was attracted to the intimate story at the center; the “bromance” between Charlie and Lola, a.k.a. Simon.“The real love story here is these two gentlemen who become friends,” says Fierstein.“And I thought it was a good opportunity to do this realistically.” He was also attracted to the theme of self-acceptance, which translates not just to the two lead characters, but all the workers in the factory:“It’s the human stories; that’s what theater’s for.” Fierstein called Lauper, who he had known socially. She was drawn to the project, as well:“It’s a story about an outsider.” Lauper enthusiastically signed on and she, Fierstein and Mitchell began a four and a half year creative odyssey to translate Kinky Boots to the stage.“I don’t keep track,” explains Mitchell.“Time to me is not the point. Getting it right is the point.” Cyndi Lauper, who grew up listening to Rodgers and Hammerstein cast albums, took to writing for characters and dramatic situations, like a duck to water.“Everybody asks the question about pop songs and theater songs,” she says.“I just think that, in some ways, they’re very similar; and in other ways, they’re not. You need to be economical; you have to say something simply. And you have to have your story—a beginning, middle and end—because if the song goes nowhere, well, what are you talking about?” Harvey Fierstein, a veteran of several musicals, including the smash hit La Cage aux Folles, gave Lauper an education in writing for the theater.“Her lessons were a lot of fun for me,” he says,“frustrating sometimes, but fun, on the other hand.” In particular, he showed Lauper how to weave music and dialogue effectively, something she resisted at first. Fierstein told her,“when it’s done right, you will never notice, but the show must move on.” A perfect example is the elaborate and catchy opening sequence,“The Most Beautiful Thing in the World,” which they crafted with Jerry Mitchell. Fierstein explains,“that tells the story of all the characters, in relationship to shoes. Everyone in that opening number is defined by a pair of shoes and you know who they are.” Although the show is mostly set in the workaday world of a shoe factory, the dream team wanted to create a sense of joy and uplift for the audience, in the way only a Broadway musical can do. The first act finale,“Everybody Say Yeah,” is an explosion of energy. Mitchell has the cast dancing on moving conveyor belts, which had been used to deliver shoes earlier in the musical. “We had so much fun creating that number,” exclaims Mitchell,“because it is a celebration of making the first pair of kinky boots and everyone in the factory gets involved.” And the show’s final numbers,“Raise You Up/ Just Be” literally does that to the audience every night.“They’re standing up, cheering, dancing and singing,” says Jerry Mitchell.“And they don’t want to leave the theater! That’s sort of a magical moment. And then, when they do walk out of the theater, you know, they’re all abuzz. That’s the kind of joy that is rare in a musical.” Photo Credit: Gavin Bond Designing the boots for Kinky Boots In a show called Kinky Boots,“you’ve gotta get the boots right,” says Gregg Barnes, costume and footwear designer for the Tony Award-winning musical. The show, based on a real story and independent film, about a failing English shoe factory which turned its fortunes around by nichemarketing sturdy boots for drag artists, has become a sold-out Broadway phenomenon. With a book by Harvey Fierstein and a Tony winning score by pop icon Cyndi Lauper, Kinky Boots relies heavily on its visual designs, and, of course, those boots by Barnes. Those boots need to be durable, to support the six-foot tall dancers doing elaborate and joyous dance routines. Says Barnes:” We’re asking them to do slam splits and quick changes, being carted up and down stairs in baskets. And we have to make them look as if they’re brand new every night, but survive eight shows a week.” Barnes adds that, after months of experimentation and broken heels, they ultimately came up with designs that are so reliable, they’ve barely had to replace any boots in the musical’s Broadway run of over a year. The designer says it was quite a challenge to create those thigh-high boots, with six inch stiletto heels.“What’s really funny about our experience with Kinky Boots is that my team, and the cobblers who made the boots, we had the exact same story as in the musical,” explains Barnes. “Everything they talk about in terms of reinforcing the heel and all of that stuff, we had the same learning curve!” And Barnes says he never tires of experiencing the enthusiasm audiences have shown for both his kinky boots and the show itself.“You know, it’s amazing,” says Barnes.“You can feel it walking into that theater. I think the audience comes so primed to have this joyous experience and it always rewards that.” J. HARRISON GHEE (Lola). A I think the answer is kind of a simple one. It’s because the show has a huge heart, and people respond to that. It’s a story about love and acceptance and friendship and overcoming obstacles and everyone can relate to that. Harvey Fierstein is one of Broadway’s great talents and the book is so very very good. It was an honor to collaborate with Harvey and tell the story of Lola and Charlie. Q Can you describe that moment when your name was announced and you won the Tony®Award? A Incredible. Simply incredible. The Broadway community is an amazing one and to be welcomed the way they welcomed me to this very special family is something that still warms my spirit. Q You join rock artists like Neil Young, Duncan WINNER! Sheik, Sting and the Flaming Lips who have made the crossover into Broadway, not by capitalizing on their existing songbooks but by writing original musicals for the theater. How is writing for the stage different from writing songs for yourself? 2 0 1 3 T O N Y AWA R D It’s very different. Your job as the composer of a musical is to move the story forward with the songs. You have to write for many voices and from all the characters’ perspectives. And I had a blast doing that. There were songs that I wrote that I really loved that didn’t make the show because maybe there was a change in the book KINKYBOOTSTHEMUSICAL.COM or there was a different arc for a character and the story and therefore the song had to change. For my own CDs, when I write a song that I love, it makes my records! And of course when I write for myself, I’m writing from my perspective, it’s the story I am trying to tell through the songs on the album to my fans. A ® VENUE NAME GOES HERE DATE XX - DATE XX Q What do you want audiences throughout the country to know about what they are in for if they come to see Kinky Boots? A An amazing show with great heart that will lift you up.
