Job Description for Research Fellow in Gastrointestinal Oncology
The Christie Hospital and Holt Radium Institute was founded in 1932 and has grown to be the
largest Cancer Hospital in the UK and one of the largest Cancer Centres in Europe covering a
large population in North West England. The hospital is a designated teaching hospital of the
University of Manchester and is the focal point of the Regional Cancer Network. All cancer
related specialties are fully operational and more than 12,000 new patients with cancer are seen
each year. It is a major Cancer research centre and combined with the Paterson Institute and
University of Manchester comprises the Manchester Cancer Research Centre.
The Post
This is a 10-session research fellow post based at the Christie Hospital site within the
Gastrointestinal Disease Orientated Group (GI DOG). This position is suitable for individuals
who wish to gain specialist training in Oncology (either Clinical or Medical Oncology) with an
emphasis on clinical research.
Background
Both the Departments of Clinical Oncology (Director: Dr Ron Stout) and Medical Oncology
(Director: Professor Robert Hawkins) have international reputations for their clinical work. All
consultants are site specialised and common treatment policies are developed as part of
Disease Oriented Groups (DOGs).
In addition to Clinical Oncology and Medical Oncology the Hospital also has clinical groups
specialising in Palliative Medicine, Surgical Oncology, Paediatric and Adolescent Oncology,
Endocrinology, Psychological Medicine and Clinical Genetics.
The GI DOG is committed to providing excellent clinical care and clinical research across the
spectrum of phase I – III studies participating in clinical trials sponsored by the National Cancer
Research Institute (NCRI), the University of Manchester/ Christie Hospital NHS Trust as well as
studies in partnership with the Pharmaceutical Industry.
Clinical Staff (GI DOG)
There are ten consultants in the non-surgical GI DOG who run the clinical service and research
practice (with the following emphases):

The consultant team is supported by 2 Nurse Clinicians, 5 Research Nurses, 1 Senior Clinical
Trials Coordinator, 4 Data Managers, 1 Clinical Trials Assistant as well as allocated Specialist
Registrars. Senior House Officer/F2-grade doctors are currently ward-based, rather than
attached to individual consultant teams.
Trust facilities
1. General medical oncology wards - 44 beds are available on modern wards with excellent
facilities.
2. A twenty bedded overnight stay ward is available for regimens requiring in patients care.
3. The Derek Crowther Unit is a purpose built clinical research unit with 14 beds for early phase
clinical trials.
4 When needed the hospital has a 4 bedded high dependency unit with anaesthetic cover and
an enlarged critical care unit has recently opened.
A wide range of different types of cancer are managed in these ward facilities and practical
training in all aspects of cancer medicine is provided at SHO/F2 and SpR levels. A general
medical training for junior medical staff is reinforced since infective, metabolic and neurological
complications of malignant disease are commonplace. Special clinical facilities include:
1. The Adult Leukaemia Unit provides facilities for patients undergoing high dose therapy.
2. ManPET provides a PET facility to support development of new agents
3. There are specialist pharmacokinetic facilities in the Paterson
4. In conjunction with the National Blood Service we have developed a GMP cell therapy
unit which can provide cells for experimental therapies.
Outpatient facilities
Routine medical oncology clinics are held daily at the Christie Hospital for new patients and
follow up. There are specialised cancer site related collaborative clinics and routine outpatient
clinics.
Specialist nurse facilities
Teams of specialist chemotherapy and research nurses are available. These nurses have
special expertise and training in the administration of chemotherapy. Specialist nurses have
been trained to insert Central Venous Catheters, to carry out bone marrow aspiration/trephine
procedures, to operate the cell separators for leukapheresis and provide psychological support
with counselling.
Other departments
The regional Department of Radiotherapy provides a service to Lancashire and North Cheshire
through regular consultative clinics (mainly weekly) staffed by its consultants in every main town
in this area. A good liaison exists between the departments of radiotherapy and medical
oncology. Many of the clinical protocols are run jointly between the two departments and there
is an excellent opportunity at specialist registrar level to participate in joint teaching programmes.
The Department of Histopathology provides a regional cancer service. The Department of
Diagnostic Radiology has two whole body CT scanners and an MR scanner in addition to
standard radiological and radionuclide imaging facilities. The Cancer Research UK Department
of Psychological Medicine is involved in collaborative research projects concerning
psychological assessment and counseling in the context of clinical trials and is responsible for
staff training in aspects of psychological support.

B.
CLINICAL AND LABORATORY SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH
Clinical
A wide range of clinical research studies is in progress and there are opportunities for junior staff
to participate in these studies and training in the development and planning of new studies is
provided. These include Phase I, II and III chemotherapy studies, combined surgery,
radiotherapy and chemotherapy studies and patient evaluation studies (staging procedures,
psychological assessment etc). A special interest is taken in the development of new biological
therapies. There is a close association with the Department of Medical Statistics. Data managers
are in post to help handle clinical and laboratory research data. Training is given in this
important aspect of clinical research.
Laboratory
Christie Hospital has strong links with the adjacent Paterson Institute of Clinical Research where
basic science research is undertaken including drug development, cell-cycle research,
immunotherapy, gene therapy and cancer biology.
