Classical Era Test Study Guide The Classical era dates between 1750-1825 The Two most important elements of Classical era art and music are: o Balance o Clarity of Structure The four basic music criteria required to meet the needs of the public during the Classical Era o Universal (appeals to people of all economic classes and cultures) o Accessible (easy to understand for all people regardless of their music knowledge) o Entertaining (used for parties, relaxation, community gatherings, etc) o Expressive (expressed emotions such as joy, sadness, love, excitement) The three main Classical era composers are: o Mozart o Haydn o Beethoven The Classical era saw the emancipation of the composer – composers broke free from working for the church and nobility to become freelance composers which gave them the ability to create whatever type of music they wanted Beethoven was the first composer to completely emancipate himself Advancements in literature were significant in the Classical era – The first editions of the dictionary and encyclopedia were written because people were becoming more educated and wanted more information about the world around them. World events such as the American Revolution, the French Revolution and the French and Indian war changed the way governments worked around the world. o The French Revolution resulted in the French people getting more control over the government and the death of King Louis IVX. o The American Revolution completely freed us from England and made it possible for the 13 colonies to join together into the United States of America. Bruno Mars is just one modern musician who uses elements of classic rock; R &B and Hip hop in his music. Michael Jackson and James Brown influenced him and elements of their music can be heard in his music and performances. His music is accessible, expressive, universal and entertaining just like the music of the great composers in the Classical period.
