Monarch Research Pathfinder Introduction For a general overview of the individual, check a general encyclopedia, print or online, such as World Book or Encyclopedia Britannica (available online). Normally, you would look people up by their last name; however, kings, queens, etc. are know by their title and first name (King Charles). Look for monarchs under their first name, for example Elizabeth I. When locating your monarch be careful to make sure the dates and country are correct. There are several King Louis and monarchs with the first name Mary. CHS Individual Biographies To locate a book on your monarch, use the library online catalog: www.clayton.k12.mo.us/chs/library Enter your monarch’s name in the search box (Henry IV). The catalog will give you a results page with a list of books with that phrase in the record. LOOK at the titles and click on the title for a fuller description of the book. In the Henry IV example, several books are plays written by William Shakespeare with that title. In general, most individual biographies have the call number 921 followed by the subjects name. Collective biographies (books containing biographical information about more than one person, for example The Wives of Henry VIII, are located in the 920 section. JSTOR Click on Search, then select Advanced Search Type in name of monarch, “Peter the Great”, then from the drop-down menu that says “FULL-TEXT” select “Article Title” for first search attempt. Check Article under Type Choose Disciplines/Journals if you’d like: History; Cultural Studies, etc. Hit Search--make sure you look at page number of article before printing (some are very long), that you have read and understood the article and that it is RELEVANT to your project before printing.
