Civil War Battles Project
Before the internet, before cars, and facebook, news had to be
transported around using a person on a horse with a note. Information on where and when a battle was
going to be fought could mean the difference between a victory and a horrible defeat with the death of
thousands of your men. The generals would send out special teams of soldiers to recon about upcoming
battles and to look at previous losses and develop new strategies and ideas. Intelligence was king and
the more information the generals and President had the better decisions they can make in ending this
war faster.
The Civil War continues on. Both sides continue to fight due powerful beliefs.
President Lincoln and Davis need more information for the upcoming battle of Gettysburg. You are
being sent behind enemy lines to gather intel on past losses so the next battle can be a SUCCESS! Your
top secret mission is to gather the info, and give the report to the president.

Use the website below on your particular battle you need to research to collect the data. From
the website you will fill in the information on a graphic organizer.
B. Writing the report. You will organize you information so it is easy for the President (Mr. Marcario) to

By Mr. Marcario
Date: 7/1/1863 – 7/3/1863
Location: Gettysburg, Pennsylvania
Description of the Battle:
The Confederates were determined to break the spirit of the Union. They thought that if they achieved
enough victories against the Union enough European nations would see them as their own country. Lee
starts to gather his troops around Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. However, due to a lack of information he
had no idea that the enemy was literally just around the corner from him. During the first day Lee sendt
a party to scout around when they run into the Union general Meade’s army. Suddenly the rest of the
Confederates formed the line and started firing upon the Union. The Union troops regrouped at higher
ground, ready to defend their position. Lee has his troop’s camp for the night to begin fighting the next
day.
On the second day Lee sent a group of elite fighters to capture a hill overlooking the Union troops. He
was met with strong resistance by the Union. After hours of fighting the Union troops held the position
and the Confederates retreated with heavy causalities. Nightfall was approaching and the Union had
held the line. Day three Lee convinced that the Union army was weak so he decided to attack the center
of the Union forces. They spent the morning firing cannons but by mid day the Union side stopped using
cannons. The confederates thought they had crippled the Union army and the army rushed ahead. As
they approached the Union cannons started to fire again and destroyed the Confederacy troops. By
nightfall Lee had ordered a retreat.
Outcome:
The North won the battle and it was the turning point in the war. Even though the war lasts for another
two years the South will no longer invade the Union, and they will be on the defensive from this point
on.
Deaths:
Total – 51,112 killed, wounded, missing, or captured
Union – 23,000
Confederate: 28,000
