What is Albert Mehrabian’s research? People assess likeability using 7% words, 38% tonality and 55% body language. Dr Albert Mehrabian, retired Professor of Psychology, of the University of California is best known for his publications on verbal and nonverbal messages in communication. His ‘Eureka Moment’ was the law of likeability. He discovered people will assess whether we like and respect each other by how we are perceived. His studies show we remember about 7% of how the communication makes us THINK, the words of verbal communication, what was actually said. We remember 93% of how the person makes us FEEL, the vibe. This is further broken down by our tone of voice being 38% of the vibe perception and our body language being 55%. If people feel our vibe matches our words they are more likely to like you. Therefore, how we behave saying our words is 13 times more impactful than our words. This is because our first language, how we FEEL is communicated as body language. Our second language, words, communicates how we THINK. 7% words 93% vibes In this cartoon, Red is unlikely to remember Bluey’s name, especially if Bluey is wearing a different colour next time they meet. Red will more likely remember Bluey’s vibes - being family focused rather than focused on broader teams. Bluey is more likely to remember Red’s name if the handshake is firm, matches the confident vibes Red shows and if Red has children who play sport. They have something in common to build the relationship. Ref: Mehrabian, Albert (2009). “Silent Messages” – A Wealth of Information About Nonverbal Communication (Body Language)”. Los Angeles, CA
