Removable Appliance
Care Sheet
Congratulations! You have just received your appliance. This is a special
orthodontic appliance designed to achieve correction of the teeth and jaws –
but its success depends on you!
Your appliance should be worn gradually until you are used to it, at
which time it should be worn all day and all night, with the exception
of eating, brushing, and active sports.
Your appliance will be checked at your scheduled adjustment
appointments; it is then we will determine if any changes need to be
made to it.
It will be difficult to speak clearly at first and you may notice a
temporary increase in your saliva flow. While getting used to it, we
suggest that you practice talking by reading out loud to overcome these
difficulties as quickly as possible.
If you experience any discomfort of the gum tissue, we recommend you
try a warm salt water rinse 3 times per day. If you find this is not
helping and sore spots persist beyond a few days please call our office;
an adjustment may be required. (403-284-5202)
Your appliance must be thoroughly cleaned regularly with your
toothbrush. You may also use any denture cleaner (eg. Polident)
periodically. Every time you brush your teeth is a good opportunity to
clean your appliance. REMEMBER TO RINSE IT THOROUGHLY.
DO NOT LET SALIVA OR TOOTHPASTE DRY ON IT.
When you are not wearing your appliance, it must ALWAYS be placed
inside its case. “If it’s not in your face, it’s in the case!”
Never place your appliance in direct sunlight or heat as it is plastic
and will melt or distort. DO NOT clean in the dishwasher or in boiling
water.
If you appliance is lost or damaged, please call the office immediately
as it will need to be repaired or replaced. Remember, your appliance is
FRAGILE and should not be abused – any breakage may result in an
additional expense and extend your wearing time.
We hope that you understand the importance of wearing your appliance and
realize that the success of this phase of your treatment depends on you! We
want to be successful together!
