At City of Hope nearly 1/3 of our eligible patients are enrolled. • We have over 300 open clinical trials ongoing. • The Center for Biomedicine & Genetics opens, enabling City of Hope to create biologically based treatments for use in clinical trials in 3 FDA approved manufacturing facilities. • Move multiple cutting-edge technologies into clinical patient studies more quickly while maintaining the high level of quality control required by the Federal Food and Drug Administration. Innovations: Harnessing the immune response as novel cancer therapy Why the immune system matters in cancer • Immune system scours your body for foreign objects like bacteria and viruses • Cancer is your own body’s cells so it does not see it as foreign, so will not kill the cells. • Immune suppression reduces efficacy of chemotherapy and can lead to relapse • How can we support the immune system and train it to fight cancer? Dramatic Advances in Breast Cancer Treatment Precision medicine, improved screening, refined surgical techniques, better understanding of subtypes Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy for Ovarian Cancer • Delivering chemotherapy directly to the abdomen in women with advanced ovarian cancer is part of an effective treatment regimen that’s too little used. • The technique, known as intraperitoneal, or IP, chemotherapy, has been linked to extended survival when delivered with traditional intravenous, or IV, chemotherapy. • City of Hope experts are well-versed in the regimen and offer IP chemotherapy to appropriate patients. How can we be proactive? The Power of Superfoods • Pomegranates, blueberries, mushrooms, cinnamon, grape seed extract are all being studied for their anti-cancer properties • Vitamins • Anti-oxidants • Food can be healing Improving your nutritional habits • Eat a Rainbow! Lots of different color fruits and veggies, dark green vegetables are especially nutrient dense. • Eat seafood in place of meat two times a week.
