American Presenters for “Modern Theatre Production Practices” FACULDADE DE LETRAS DA UNIVERSIDADE DE LISBOA Mestrado em ESTUDOS DE TEATRO 2012 (2º semestre/Spring semester) Course Instructor / Facilitator: Thomas Hines: Professor Emeritus, Set and Lighting Design, Theatre Architecture, Whitman College, USA Thomas Hines is a Professor of Theatre at Whitman College, USA. He is a scenic and lighting designer with over two hundred professional and academic theatre production credits. His professional portfolio can be found at: <http://people.whitman.edu/~hinest/portfolio/Hines_Portfolio/Portfolio_Home.html> In addition to serving as Department Chair at Whitman College for thirteen years and teaching courses in theatre design and technology, Hines is the developer and editor of The Ancient Theatre Archive: An Internet resource for theatre history and architecture studies. The project was conceived as an online, encyclopedic survey of representative ancient Greek and Roman theatres. Hines’ research and photographic expeditions to Turkey, Greece, Spain, Portugal, France, Egypt, and Italy have produced over fourteen thousand high-resolution photographs of seventy-two Greek and Roman theatres. The project website can be found at: <http://www.whitman.edu/theatre/theatretour/home.htm> Recent presentations on ancient theatre architecture include lectures at The Graduate University of Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing, The American University in Cairo, and The University of Lisbon. In his capacity as the USITT Vice-Commissioner for Computer Applications, Hines has lectured frequently on digital imaging and archival practices. Hines is the recipient of two Sally Ann Abshire Research Scholar Awards and a Perry Research Scholarship Grant. His research has benefited from a United States Institute for Technology Grant, a visiting scholar grant from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, a CwTI Rockefeller Grant, and a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship. Invited Presenters: Nancy Simon: Professor of Directing, Acting, Theatre Literature and History, Whitman College Presenting Friday, 16-March (arriving 12-March, departing 20-March) Dr. Simon is a professional director and a professor of directing, acting, theatre history and literature. Presentation Topics may include: the director’s process: script interpretation, casting and rehearsals, and production as a collaborative art. Dr. Nancy Simon holds the Paul Garrett Endowed Professorship at Whitman College and is The Director of Harper Joy Theatre and has served as Chair of the Theatre program. She teaches directing, acting, theatre history, and dramatic literature. Dr. Simon is a theatre and opera director with over 100 credits at college/university, community, and professional companies. They have included classics, contemporary plays, national and world premiers, musical, revues, operettas and operas. Professor Simon’s Master Classes and Workshops include: USITT (United States Institute of Theatre Technology) theatre exchange to Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, 2006; USITT theatre exchange to Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania, 2003: Kunchu Opera, Beijing, 2003; Alexander Technique, Santa Barbara, 2001, Chekhov in Performance, Northwestern University, 1998; Scene study workshop with Mark Jenkins Catherine Madden, University of Washington; Broadway Lighting Design Master Class 1991; Lighting Design with John Gleason and Richard Devin, University of Washington, 1979; Kosciusko Foundation theatre exchange working with leading Polish actors and directors in Warsaw, Krakow, Wroclaw, 1977. Professor Simon is also a professional lighting designer with over 60 design credits. Her professional affiliations include: Actors’ Equity Association, Artists’ Trust, Theatre Communications Group, and the United States Institute of Theatre Technology. Nadine Charlsen: Professor of Design, Kean University, N.J., USA Presenting Friday, 23-March (arriving 21-March departing 26-March). Professor Charlsen is a professional designer, scene painter, and stage manager, and a professor of design and technology. Presentation topics may include: professional design and stage management, working as a theatre professional in New York, theatre design and technology training programs. Professional Affiliations: AEA (Equity), ATAC (Association of Theatrical Artists and Craftspeople), and USITT (United States Institute of Theatre Technology); teaches scenic & lighting design/technology, stage management, scenic painting and construction. Nadine is a freelance set/lighting designer, scenic artist, and Equity stage manager. She has designed and painted for Off-Broadway, regional theatres, television, amusement parks, magicians, restaurants, and shopping malls. Her first professional experience was 5 seasons at Music Theatre of Wichita as a scenic artist and “technical spare part”. She has worked on props for Broadway shows including Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Women in White, Wedding Singer, Shrek and Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. She is the set and lighting designer for the Department of Theatre at Kean University and designs lights for many of the Premiere Stages productions. Nadine is a long time member of the United States Institute of Theatre Technology (USITT) having served for several years as vice-commissioner of Scene Painting for the Scene Design Commission. She was a commissioner for 9 years and on the Board of Directors for 6 years. She now serves on the Grants and Fellowship Committee. Nadine is also a member of the Stage Management Association and initiated the Stage Managers’ Directory in the 1990’s which is now an online service for it’s over 500 members. She is the Vice President of the Association of Theatrical Artists and Craftspeople and has been the computer layout manager for the Entertainment Sourcebook since 1995. Nadine is the technical advisor for the Theatre Resources Unlimited new play and musical series twice a year. In addition to her theatrical activities, she is a fine artist specializing in watercolor; represented in two permanent exhibits in New York and the Atelier 24 Lexington Gallery in Asheville, North Carolina. She has won honors and been in several juried competitions for her watercolors. See the design work at www.nadinedesigns.com See the watercolor and other painting work at www.nadinepaints.com Anna Bullard: Professional Actor Presenting Friday, 30-March (arriving 21-march, departing 2-April) Ms. Bullard is a professional actor with numerous regional theatre and commercial film credits and is a member of Actors’ Equity. Presentation topic: the acting process and the viability of a career in professional theatre. Anna Bullard began her studies in theatre at the tender age of eleven, and spent ten years working in stagecraft and theatre production before moving to performance. A year-long internship at the prestigious Actors Theatre of Louisville, home of the yearly Humana Festival, the Sundance Film Festival of the theatre world, landed her an agent in New York and work on the regional theatre circuit, where Anna has acted in more than 30 productions across the country including Titus Andronicus (Lavinia, dir. Joel Sass) and Mrs. Warren's Profession (Vivie, dir. Timothy Near) at California Shakespeare Theatre; As You Like It (Rosalind, for which she received a Best Actress nomination from the Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle) and The Foreigner at San Jose Repertory Theatre; Around the World in 80 Days at Laguna Playhouse in Los Angeles; Equivocation and Killer Joe at Marin Theatre Company; and Collected Stories at Cinnabar Theatre with Carol Mayo Jenkins (Fame). She has also worked extensively on new works, including the premieres of Jeffrey Hatcher's Ten Chimneys and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde at Arizona Theatre Company (dir. David Ira Goldstein); Goldfish and The Hopper Collection at The Magic Theatre in San Francisco; Zayd Dohrn's Magic Forest Farm at Marin Theatre Company; and Moot the Messenger and Uncle Sam's Satiric Spectacular Actors Theatre of Louisville. Her recordings include The Redeemer, an original radio play by Crazy Dream Sound, and her commercial credits include videos and nationals for Bank of America, Oracle, and various Silicon Valley tech companies. Daniel Heath: Profession Playwright Presenting Friday, 30-March (arriving 21-march, departing 2-April) Mr. Heath is a professional San Francisco Bay Area playwright with numerous American and Canadian credits. He is a three-time winner of the Playground Emerging Playwright Award. Presentation topic: the playwright’s process and the viability of a career in professional theatre. Daniel Heath's recent full-length plays include MAN OF ROCK, an adaptation of Man of Mode set on the 1980's Jersey shore (2011 New York Musical Theatre Festival and the Climate Theatre, San Francisco) SEVEN DAYS (San Francisco Playhouse). His choose-your-own-adventure Christmas play, A MERRY FORKING CHRISTMAS (PianoFight Productions, San Francisco), recently named "a budding holiday tradition" by the San Francisco Chronicle, just finished playing to sold-out crowds for the third straight year. He is a three-time recipient of commissions from PlayGround, the San Francisco Bay Area's home for new play development, and is currently working on a commission from Just Theater. His award-winning short plays have been performed across the United States and Canada. Daniel received his BA in English from Cornell University, and his MA in English from University of California, Berkeley. Lee Potter: Professional Theatre Producer and Stage Manager Presenting: Friday, 13-April (in residence during March and April). Ms. Potter has worked for over thirty years as a professional production manager, general manager, stage manager, and producer. Her work also includes design for theatre spaces as a theatre consultant, and extensive credits in both theatre and festival production. She is a member of Actors’ Equity Association. Presentation topics may include: production and stage management, working as a theatre professional in Chicago, the duties and process of the theatre producer. Lee Potter has had a long and successful career in the theatre. As a teen, she discovered she had a gift for stage management, which led her to major in Drama at Ripon College in Ripon, WI. While there she developed skills in all areas of theatre, including properties, sound and scene design, directing, and occasionally a turn as an actress. After graduation she went home to the Chicago area, planning to stay just long enough to ready herself for a move to New York. She was soon deeply involved in the burgeoning theatre scene in Chicago, and once captured she never left. Over her thirty-year career she worked her way up from Production Stage Manager to Production Manager to Producer. She began as a Production Stage Manager for theatres including Victory Gardens, Body Politic, Organic, Shakespeare Repertory, Northlight, Chicago Shakespeare and Goodman, and commercial producers Travel Light, Cullen, Henaghan & Platt, Payne Leavitt Group and Fox Theatricals. Then followed a period of Production Management for Northlight , Chicago Shakespeare, Lookingglass, Steppenwolf and Goodman Theatres. She managed the opening of the new theatre space for Lookingglass Theatre in the historic Water Works building on Michigan Ave, was founding Director of Production for Chicago Children’s Theatre, and produced the New York production of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee at the Drury Lane Water Tower Theatre for Broadway in Chicago. Ultimately, she moved into greater management roles; she became the General Manager for The Actors Gymnasium, following which she worked as a Theatre Consultant for Schuler Shook in their Chicago office, designing theatre spaces. She became the Producer for Redmoon Theatre in 2009 and produced media for Swan Lake in conjunction with The Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago production and four-city Brazil Tour of The Cabinet, hosted and produced productions for Chicago Humanities Festival, and produced the Chicago Lakefront Festival, JOE- a Joyous Outdoor Event.
