The Digestive &
Excretory Systems
My Goals
I will know the main job & main
organs of the digestive system.
I will know the main job & the
waste products of the excretory
system.
Think, Pair, Share
What organs make
up your digestive
system?
Digestive System
• Organs include:
1. Tongue & Teeth (in mouth)
2. Esophagus
3. Stomach
4. Small Intestine (ileum)
5. Large Intestine (colon)
6. Rectum & Anus
Functions of the Digestive System
1. Breaks down food into simple substances.
2. Absorbs nutrients.
3. Converts food into energy.
What does convert mean?
How do nutrients get into my body?
1. Ingestion =
Food enters
the mouth.
Think, Pair, Share
1. How does your mouth break
down food for your body?
How does your mouth break down
food for your body?
a) The tongue & teeth mechanically
(physically) break food up.
b) Saliva chemically digests
food.
Saliva = Mostly made of water, also
contains mucus & enzymes!

How does food know to go down my
esophagus instead of my trachea?
a) When swallowing, the epiglottis
(a small flap of tissue) automatically
closes over the trachea (windpipe).
Esophagus
Food travels
in this tube
from the
mouth to the
stomach.
Point to your
esophagus!
Think, Pair, Share
When you choke, what is happening?
What comes after ingestion?
1. Ingestion = Food enters the mouth.
2. Digestion =
Process that breaks
food down into
small pieces.
What organ digests your food?
Stomach
How is food digested?
a.) Mechanical digestion =
Food is chewed and
churned.
b.) Chemical digestion =
Stomach acid (HCl) breaks down
large food molecules into
small molecules (nutrients)
to be absorbed by cells.
Which is not an example of
mechanical digestion?
a) Teeth chewing food.
b) Tongue breaking up food.
c) Smooth muscles in stomach churning food.
d) Hydrochloric acid breaking down proteins.

What is it called when
food is taken in your
body?
Ingestion!
What is it called when
food is broken down
into tiny pieces?
Digestion!
What happens after food is digested?
1. Ingestion
2. Digestion
3. Absorption =
Small food molecules
(nutrients)
are taken into the body cells.
Where do red blood cells grab
nutrients to take to each body cell?
(Where are nutrients absorbed?)
Small Intestine
(6 meters long)
1. Absorption of nutrients happens here.
2. Intestinal juice breaks down food.
(full of enzymes)
How do the tiny nutrients
get into the blood stream?
• Digested food is
absorbed through the
villi in the small intestine
into a network of blood
vessels that carry the
nutrients to all body cells
in your entire body!
Where do nutrients get absorbed into
the blood stream?
a)
b)
c)
d)
Mouth
Stomach
Small intestine
Liver
What happens to food that
isn’t absorbed?
1. Ingestion
2. Digestion
3. Absorption
4. Elimination =
Waste (unabsorbed food)
pass out of the body.
Large Intestine
What happens in the large intestine?
a) Undigested food spends 18–24
hours here, and most of the
water is absorbed.
b) Collects solid waste
(dead bacteria, undigested food,
& old intestinal cells).
What is another name for the
large intestine?
Large Intestine
=
Colon
Which is not a function of the
digestive system?
a) Breaking down food into molecules the body
can use
b) Absorbing food molecules into the blood to
deliver to the body
c) Changing waste into molecules the body can
use
d) Eliminating undigested waste from the body
Think, Pair, Share
What are the 3 function of
the digestive system?
1. Breaks down food into simple
substances.
2. Absorbs nutrients.
3. Converts food into energy.
Excretory
System
What is the job of
the excretory system?
1. Filters and removes waste from the blood.
Think, Pair, Share
1. What waste products do you excrete?
Carbon Dioxide (Exhaling)
Undigested food, bacteria, & old intestine cells (Feces)
Waste products in the blood stream (Urine)
Water and salts (Sweat)
What organ filters your blood?
Kidneys
Filter blood that
has collected wastes
from cells.
Where is urine stored until the body
is ready to eliminate it?
1. Kidneys
2. Ureters
3. Bladder
4. Urethra
What organ excretes water & salts
when your body gets too hot?
Skin
Releases perspiration (water and salts)
to cool off the body.
What organ releases carbon
dioxide from the body?
Lungs
Release carbon dioxide from the body.
Which is not a function of
the excretory system?
1. Removes wastes from the blood
2. Removes excess water from the blood
3. Removes carbon dioxide from the blood
4. Removes excess salt from the blood
