Master of Chinese Society and Public Policy in English PROGRAMME DESCRIPTION About a fifth of all the people in the world live in China. At the same time as China has the longest continuous culture surviving from ancient times, globalisation widely affects Chinese culture and society. And as a country, China will have big influence in the politics and economics of the twenty-first century. Chinese culture and society is undergoing dramatic changes in the era of globalisation and transformation. The two-year English-instructed master’s degree program in Chinese Society and Public Policy is a full time program, with five different program options, that provides rigorous training in sociology and social policy, covering a broad range of topics from sociology, anthropology, social policy and demography. By choosing this program students will get the opportunity to take courses taught by some of China’s leading sociologists and be part of an academic environment that prides itself on being on the forefront of sociology & public policy research. The program provides an excellent opportunity for students with little or no Chinese language skills to develop a deep understanding of China in the modern world. The program is taught at the prestigious School of Social Development and Public Policy (SSDPP) of Fudan University. The School is one of the global strongholds in the teaching and research in sociology and social development studies. The SSDPP has over 60 fulltime faculty members. Majority of them received their PhD degrees from overseas universities such as Harvard University, LSE, Princeton University, University of Chicago, Duke University, University of Washington-Seattle, Chinese University Hong Kong and so on. Its international cooperation extents to such partners as Harvard University, London School of Economics and Political Science, Columbia University, UC Berkeley, University of Hong Kong, National University of Singapore, University of Oslo, Lund University and many other. Ten percent of the School’s students are international students, from the US, Canada, Japan, UK, Germany, France, the Nordic countries, the Netherlands, etc. Currently the SSDPP operates two English-instructed Dual Degree master programs: 1) Master Program in Social Policy, with Washington University in St.Louis 2) Master Program in Development Studies, with Lund University APPLICATION REQUIRED MATERIALS All documents must be prepared in either Chinese or English: Fudan fill-out application form, together with signature and photograph One regular passport photocopy (personal information page-passport validity must be adequate for study). Original graduation certificates or documents proving students status at current university (notarized photocopies are accepted). Certificates or documents in languages other than Chinese or English must be translated and notarized. The original or notarized photocopies of corresponding transcripts. DURATION Depending on the different demands of students, English-instructed Master Program in Chinese Society and Public Policy (EMA) can be either semester course or degree course. In terms of degree students, EMA consists of a two-year full-time course study. The first year of the program is designed to provide a solid grounding in Chinese culture, society and issues of social development. The third semester of the program provides research opportunity on China. Master students are required to complete and defend an MA thesis. In terms of non-degree students, EMA can be a good 1-2 semester programme. It will allow students to have the opportunity to not only study Mandarin and experience Chinese culture and local people, but collect credits from courses on postgraduate level at one of the top universities in Asia.
