STUDENT:
Summer Science students cycle through five units, four of which include field trips. Please see the details
of these trips below. The date your child goes on these trips depends on which group he or she is in.
Students will receive group assignments along with a calendar showing when their field trips occur.
Geology:
1. Fossil Collecting - Highway P near the intersection with Hwy 18/151, east of Mt. Horeb. Students
hammer for and collect small, invertebrate fossils. Roadside weeds and grasses present.
2. UW Geology Museum – Students participate in a guided tour of collections and displays.
Entomology:
1. Indian Lake County Park – Students collect insects for identification in both prairie and wetland
areas.
2. UW Entomology museum (Russell Laboratory) - Students participate in a guided tour of insect
collections and a talk on collecting techniques with a stop for ice cream at Babcock Hall usually
included.
Genetics:
1. UW Biotechnology Center (Genetics Building) - Students complete a DNA extraction from wheat
germ, use a centrifuge to separate liquid from obtained DNA sample and tour labs
2. ProMega (Biopharmaceutical Technology Center Institute, or BTCI) - Students perform genetic
transformation of E. coli bacteria with a plasmid containing the click beetle luciferase gene (which
has the ability to make bioluminescent light).
Wetlands:
1. Cherokee Marsh - Students make observations of organisms with particular emphasis on plants,
birds and sampling of aquatic life. Instruction on how to identify and avoid two common problem
plants; poison ivy and wild parsnip.
2. Indian Lake County Park – Students participate in organism observation with emphasis on plants
and birds, aquatic organism sampling and a GPS scavenger hunt.
