All Students must complete a Student Audition Form and present it at the registration table the
day of auditions. If the form is incomplete, the student will not be allowed to audition.
You must be regular members of the choir/chorus of their own school. Only students who are
well qualified, well prepared, of good character, and of a reliable nature should be permitted to
audition.
Each student who sings in the All-Shore Chorus is required to sign a membership agreement
regarding the responsibilities of membership in the chorus. This must also be signed by their
parent/guardian, school principal, and Choral Director.
An auditioning student must be in grades 9-12. The student may audition for any one voice part.
She/he will not be re-auditioned for another part.
Any student will be disqualified who sings or makes noise in the hallways during auditions.
Students must not wear any school jackets, T-shirts, uniforms, etc., which would identify their
school to the judges. They must not wear any pins, hats, etc., that would identify them as
members of All-State, All-Shore, Band, Chorus, Orchestra, etc., or as the recipient of any special
musical honor or award.
Once an audition time is assigned, students will be required to audition at the designated time.
Students from the same school must register together and on time. Once auditions have been
closed, they will not be re-opened for late-comers.
Scholarships:
Up to 2 scholarships may be presented at the final concert. The recipient(s) will each
perform one of their audition songs on that evening. If it is deemed by the directors of
the All-Shore Chorus that no student qualifies, then a scholarship will not be presented
for that year.
The student must be a Senior member of the 2015-2016 All-Shore Chorus, in good standing.
The student must be entering a 2- or 4-year college/university with a major or minor in vocal
music performance or music education.
Students must prepare two memorized “art” songs/arias:
One in English (NO Broadway or “pop” songs permitted)
One in a foreign language
Students must return applications at the first rehearsal in order to be eligible for the
scholarship.
Auditions will take place on Wednesday, January 13, 2016. If you are unable to bring an
accompanist with you, one will be provided, as long as you indicate the need on the application.
You will be notified as to your time of audition, which will be during the regular rehearsal.
Students will be notified of their selection at a future rehearsal.
AUDITION PROCEEDURES AND INSTRUCTIONS
Judges Face The Students – The Auditions Are Not “Blind”
Part 1: Tonal Patterns (Scales and Arpeggios)
All pitches are digitally produced on the audition CD.
All tonal patterns are to be sung legato, on the syllable ‘ah’. All notes should be of equal length,
except that the last note may be held slightly.
All tonal patterns are to be sung at a moderately slow tempo of about MM=80 for each note. The
tempo will not be given by the judge. After the CD plays the pitch, the student will start singing by
him/herself.
The tonal patterns will be sung in the following order:
Low Major Scale: All singers sing a descending scale, starting on the top note. Sing down the
scale, take a breath, and beginning on the octave below, sing up the scale to the starting note.
High Major Scale: Sing up the major scale to the octave above, take a breath, and beginning on
the octave above, sing down the scale to the starting note.
Chromatic Scale: Sing up the chromatic scale to the fifth above by half steps, a total of 8 notes,
take a breath, and beginning on the fifth above, sing down the chromatic scale to the starting
note.
Arpeggio: Sing the notes of the major triad, starting with the root, then the third, fifth, octave,
tenth, and back down to the octave, fifth, third, and root, in one breath. For a starting note of C,
the notes would be C-E-G-high C-high E, high C-G-E-C. If the arpeggio begins on a note too low
for a Tenor 1 only, the student may be allowed to start on a higher note and only sing the octave.
Part 2: Quartet
Each student will sing from memory his/her part in the selected quartet excerpt. Copies of the quartet
excerpt with performance instructions are enclosed.
The students will be accompanied by a recording of the other three voice parts. A CD recording of all four
parts, similar to the CD that will be used in the audition rooms will be played in the warm-up room.
If the quartet is unaccompanied, the pitch and starting cue will be given on the CD. The judges will not
give the pitch or any cues to the student. The pitch given on the CD will be DO of the first chord. This may
not be the first note for your voice part.
Students may not bring music.
A singer who gets a false start on a tonal pattern or the quartet may be granted a second chance by the
judges. A false start may be penalized, however the decision will be left up to the judges. No second
chance is given for wrong notes or missed entrances within the quartet after the initial entrance.
Part 3: Tonal Memory
The student will be given a sheet of music with several numbered examples. Each example will be written
in both treble and bass clefs, choose your appropriate clef.
The judge will play a recording in which the example is played twice on the piano. After hearing the
example played twice, the student will sing it on the syllable ‘la’ for each note, at the same pitches and
tempo, and with the same rhythm as played on the recording. The examples begin and end on DO. The
students will not receive a starting note, but are expected to sing immediately following completion of the
second playing.
A singer who gets a false start on a tonal pattern or the quartet may be granted a second chance by the
judges. A false start may be penalized, the decision will be left up to the judges.
The tonal memory portion will be given in a separate room. You may complete the tonal memory audition
before or after the Scales/Quartet.
