WHAT ARE THE FIVE KINGDOMS? Scientists use criteria for classification to organise living things into groups. Classification enables them to compare different living things. Scientists classify things into five kingdoms by three main criteria: type of cells, how the cells are grouped, and nutrition. Monera kingdom Contains unicellular, prokaryotic organisms. They may be autotrophic or heterotrophic. Bacteria and cyanobacteria. Protoctist kingdom Contains unicellular and multicellular living things. They are all eukaryotes. They have no tissues. They may be utotrophic or heterotrophic. Protozoa, algae. Fungi kingdom Contains unicellular and m Cellular living things. The are eukaryotes. They have tissues. They are heterotrophyc. Yeats, moulds, mushroom Plant kingdom Contains multicellular eukaryotes. They have tissues. They are autotrophic. Mosses, ferns, flowering plants. Animal kingdom Contains multicellular eukaryotes. They have tissues. They are heterotrophic. Animal: may be invertebrate or vertebrate. Activities 1.Copy and complete the table to describe the five kingdoms. Kingdom Type of cells Monera Protoctist Fungi Plant Animal Prokaryotic Tissues Autotrophic/Heterotrophic No tissues Eukariotic Heterotrophic They have tissues 2. What common characteristic have animals and plants? 3. Which kingdoms have organisms with autotrophic nutrition. 4. What are the similitudes between Fungi kingdom and Animal kingdom related to the type of nutrition?
