Slavery In Ancient Rome
• Slavery in ancient Rome played an important
role in society.
• Slaves performed many domestic services.
• Greek slaves were highly educated.
• Unskilled slaves, or those brought to slavery
as punishment, worked on farms, in mines,
and at mills.
• Their living conditions were brutal, and their
lives were very short.
Duties & Punishments for Slaves
• Slaves were considered property under Roman
Law. They had no legal rights to their citizenship.
• Slaves were treated very unfairly. Mostly women,
they did men’s work out on mills and farms and
they also could have been forced to sexual
exploitation.
• The testimony of a slave could not be accepted in
a court of law unless the slave was tortured with
full proof.
