The Civil War
Written by C. Foulk, C. Torres and Mrs. Greener
The Civil War started because the North and South could
not agree.
The South wanted to own slaves to work on plantations.
The North did not want slaves because they thought
owning slaves was wrong.
Slavery became one of the major causes of the Civil War.
The North and South fought over slavery.
The slaves had to do lots of farm work in the South.
Life for an African American male in the South was not a
good one.
Slaves were not paid to do work.
They had no freedom to read or write.
Life was hard for both the North and South during the
Civil War.
The Civil War began in April 1861.
Many families had to move away from the fighting.
Many men were drafted for the war.
Men traveled all over fighting during the Civil War.
During the war, the South made their own flag and
called themselves the Confederates. They elected their
own president too.
The President of the South Confederacy was Jefferson
Davis.
Robert E. Lee was the General of the Confederate Army.
The Northern states were called the Union.
Abraham Lincoln was the President of the North.
Ulysses S. Grant was the General of the Union Army.
The Civil War ended in April 1865.
Slaves became free when the North won the Civil War.
