Directions: Use the information below and your knowledge of social studies to answer the
questions that follow.
Historical Background: Many Greek city-states, such as Athens and Sparta, sent citizens to start new
colonies beyond the shores of Greece. Trade between the city-states of Greece and Greek colonies
helped to take care of food shortages in Greece where there was a lack of good farm land. As a result,
active trade developed between the mainland of Greece and Greek colonies. Merchants and traders
developed a system for the exchange of goods that used coins as a form of payment. Each Greek citystate issued its own money in the form of coins. These coins often bore the symbols of that city-state.
