Arcturus
• The name derives from ancient Greek
meaning Guardian of the Bear.
• Arabic: one of two stars called al-Simak (the
uplifted one)
• Red, giant star w/ /1.46 magnitude
• 36.66 light years
• 4th Brightest star.
– RA: 14h15m
– DEC: 19O
Pollux
• “Castor and Pollux” according to Roman mythology.
Zeus seduced Leda by disguising himself as a swan.
Castor was born by King of Sparta, Pollux by Zeus.
Castor died, Pollux wanted to join him in Hades, so
Zeus was sympathetic and placed both in the sky.
• 17th Brightest star in the sky
• 33.7 light years
• “bright star” w/ luminosity 32 times that of the sun.
• The brightest star in the sky with a known planet
orbiting it
– RA: 7h45m
– DEC: 28.1O
Orion
• The sun of Neptune with an amazon huntress as a
mother. He became the world’s greatest hunter,
became overly confident, and came to a tragic
end when an itty-bitty scorpion stung him.
• Another version, he got a little too close with
Diana, and Apollo in anger bet his sister that she
couldn’t hit a distant target. She did and it turns
out the target was Orion.
• He is in the sky as a hunter attacking a bull and
can be identified by his belt of three large stars.
Orion
Significant Objects
• Two of the brightest stars:
Rigel and Betelgeuse.
• Contains Messier 42: Orion
Nebula (a diffuse
emission/reflection)
