Some recent examples of developments of urban and deep underground spaces are reviewed first, and then the purposes and methods of laboratory and in-situ tests on rocks and soils are shown. After mechanical properties of soft rocks and weathering problems of rocks are outlined, planning of laboratory and in-situ tests of deep underground are studied. Furthermore, each student in the course has to make a presentation to show a literature survey result of the course contents at the end. Course Goals It is expected that conducting of the course work will enable you to obtain an ability to explain fundamental knowledge of field and laboratory measurements in geotechnical engineering. Course Schedule (1) Introduction (2) Present state and prospect of developments of urban and deep underground spaces (3) Laboratory and in-situ test methods for rocks and soils (4) Mechanical properties of soft rocks (5) Weathering problems of rocks (6) Planning of laboratory and in-situ tests of deep underground (7) Presentation of a literature survey result of the course contents by each student Homework Students need to spend about three hours per week for assignments, preparetion, and lecture review. Grading System Based on class attendance (10%), 4 or 5 assignments given during the term (30%), midterm examination (30%), and final examination (30%). Textbooks Handouts made by the course instructor will be distributed. Reading List Introduction to Rock Mechanics/V.S.
