Women’s Tribunals on Gender and Climate Justice: Women Mobilizing AWID Forum Rosa Lizarde FEMINIST TASK FORCE Ecological Health of Our Planet In-Depth Session April 19, 2012 background 2007 spear-headed women’s tribunals on poverty 2008 GCAP coalitions followed w/ 20 poverty hearings 2009 FTF’s “7 countries, 3 continents, 1 call” Nepal, Pakistan, India, Nigeria, Botswana, Uganda, Brazil 2011 Strengthening Voices, Search for Solutions w/ Greenpeace & InterPress Ser. 15 women’s tribunals on climate justice context: women’s voices Burden on women of extreme weather and impact of climate change Women as a vulnerable group Highlight voices of grassroots and rural women Leveraging high-level platforms (UN, COP, G20) Emphasize climate change as a women’s issue (food security, water, land, energy) climate change exacerbates poverty, contributes to disintegration of families and communities cause for migration further deepens the feminization of poverty climate change impact Emphasize the gender dimension of climate change Collection of authentic, specific and exemplary testimonies of grassroots and rural women have experienced climate change related problems in their lives and communities, and their search solutions.
