Homemade whitening Cream Have you noticed that new trends in Thailand come and go very easily? Fashion and social interests are examples of trends that hit Thai people greatly but also fade away quickly as well. However, one trend that seems to be standing in the lead is the popularity of having white skin. Consequently, this social trend has created the homemade whitening cream business trend. Some people might question why the majority of Thai people want to have white skin. Back in the Sukhothai period, early kingdom in the north central of Thailand, Chinese began coming to Thailand as trading through ships prospered. Those rich Chinese people were white while many poor Thai people were darker because they had to work in the field and grow crops. This was when the white skin admiration of Thai people first originated. Until now, Thai people don’t want to be confused with lower class labors and migrant workers. Other factors are the Korean, Japanese, and half-Thai-half-foreign fevers. Because many Thai teenagers admire these people who usually have white skin, Thai people want to look like them. Obviously, many businesses see this trend as an opportunity to gain profit. Various whitening creams have been introduced to the market increasingly; not only brand name creams, but also low standard homemade whitening creams. There are many creams that don’t even pass the Food and Drug Administration standard but are sold widely in the market. These creams usually contain dangerous substances that harm human’s internal organs directly but give white skin as their side effects. “The Food and Drug Administration has named four main substances that shouldn’t be used in creams, but many producers still use them because they give out white skin result,” said Dr. Adunchai Sangsert, plastic surgeon at BB clinic (beauty clinic). “These substances are mercury, hydroquinone, retinol acid, and corticosteroid.” Firstly, mercury is a chemical element that is used for industrial purposes such as in plastic production. However, because it can cause a lighter skin tone by distracting the body’s process of producing melanin, cream producers put this element into the creams. This can result in skin rashes, skin discoloration, and scars. Moreover, the internal organs such as bloodstream, liver, kidney, and urinal gland can get inflamed when too much mercury is absorbed into the body. Secondly, hydroquinone is a substance used mainly to bleach leather in an industry. Obviously, the substance is too strong to be applied onto human skin. Even though it gives white and lighter skin color, hydroquinone can cause skin irritation, redness, itching, or even burning sensation whenever it is applied on the skin. Thirdly, retinol acid is a nutrient made in the human body from vitamin A to help cells grow and develop. The acid however, can cause dysfunction to the internal organs in which the side effect results in the bleach of the skin color when it is applied too much on the skin. Fourth, corticosteroid is a natural steroid hormone produced by the adrenal gland. “Steroid is dangerous in every way,” said Premjit Rungbumrung, pharmacist at Vichaiyut Hospital. “People should use this substance or any medicine only under a doctor’s care.” The corticosteroid makes the skin layer thinner and damages the skin barrier that protects substances from getting into the inner layers of the skin. Since usual homemade whitening creams contain corticosteroid, they will guarantee skin whiteness in several days. Currently, the homemade whitening cream business has grown dramatically for decades. Skincare market in Thailand has a size of 10,500 million baht, while the whitening products have the largest share of 60 percents, growing from three to four percents from the new and current users. The main purpose for using a whitening cream is to become socialized and appealing. The consumer aged between 18-25 years old usually purchase whitening products every two months, an average of 250-400 baht per month. Because most Thai women want to have white skin, whitening products become the major products of the skin care market in Thailand. The following chart is the information of skin care market in Thailand from Beiersdorf Thailand Company, international skin care company. Statistics of Skin Care Market Whitening products General skin care products Anti wrinkle products overall treatment products 10% 16% 14% 60% Even though many people have known the risk and seen various cases showing the bad effects on users, there are still many people who prefer to buy the creams because they concern more on having white skin. For example, in September 2013, there was a case of students in Petchburi who used homemade whitening creams that contained steroid and other dangerous substances. Not long after using the creams, the students had to face with skin damages and undergo serious skin treatment. “I know that it’s dangerous but I wanted to be white so I used it anyway,” said one of the victims. When asked a cream seller about this issue, she said that not everyone would get the same effect from using the creams. “We provide different levels of whitening mixtures for customers to choose from; while someone is allergic to certain creams, others might not get the effects,” said the cream seller at Jae Leng Plaza, a well-known wholesale cream market located at Don Mueang, Bangkok. “Actually, don’t be afraid if you want to be white, or else just don’t buy the products.” According to the seller, the best seller creams are those that give the fastest skin whiteness even though they are not totally safe. However, not every nation has the same perception; many foreigners admire tanned skin. According to our survey, more foreigners like tanned skin more than white skin because they think people with tanned skin look healthier and more attractive. Lastly, Dr. Adunchai Sangsert left a quote as guidance to Thai people in this generation. “Obviously, people have different points of view toward appearance; those with darker skin want it white and vice versa. Therefore, it is best to be satisfied with yourself,” Sources: http://voices.yahoo.com/white-skin-must-thailand-822557.html http://www.accessscience.com/studycenter.aspx?main=21&questionID=5758 http://www.manager.co.th/qol/viewnews.aspx... http://www.who.int/.../public_health/mercury_flyer.pdf http://www.news-medical.net/health/Retinoic-Acid-What-is-Retinoic-Acid.aspx http://www.positioningmag.com/magazine/details.aspx?id=97151 http://www.manager.co.th/daily/ViewNews.aspx?NewsID=9560000132492 http://waymagazine.org/movement/%E0%B9%80%E0%B8%A3%E0%B8%B7%E0%B9%88%E0%B8%A D%E0%B8%87%E0%B8%82%E0%B8%B2%E0%B8%A7%E0%B8%97%E0%B8%B5%E0%B9%88%E0%B9 %84%E0%B8%A1%E0%B9%88%E0%B9%80%E0%B8%9B%E0%B9%87%E0%B8%99%E0%B8%82%E0% B9%88%E0%B8%B2/ http://asiancorrespondent.com/90046/thai-craze-for-white-skin-how-far-does-it-go-and-where-willit-end/ http://www.cosmeticsdesign-asia.com/Market-Trends/Skin-lightening-trend-in-Asia-boosts-globalmarket http://www.marketingoops.com/reports/metrix/market-share-2/ http://www.brandage.com/Modules/DesktopModules/Article/ArticleDetail.aspx?tabID=7&ArticleID =2347&ModuleID=701&GroupID=793 http://www.beiersdorf.co.th/About_Us.html
