Aggressive- Use of words or actions that are
disrespectful towards others
Passive- When someone holds back ideas,
feelings, and decisions; they make excuses
for their behavior
Assertive- The honest expression of feelings,
ideas, and decisions without feeling worried
or threatened.

Identify ways to express emotions by sharing
thoughts with another person
 “I” messages: a statement focusing on specific
behavior, how it affects the person and how they feel
 “You” messages: a statement that blames another
person for doing something
 Nonverbal communication: use of actions to express
emotions or thoughts (rolling eyes, crossing arms)




Mind Reading- assuming one’s thoughts or feelings
Avoiding Communication
Labeling- using names to verbally attack or threaten
Alienating Messages- criticism, put-downs, or
aggressive communication


