Necessities for Combustion
• Engine: Fuel (gas) + Ignition (spark) + O2
• Fire: Fuel (wood) + Ignition (match) + O2
• Muscle: Fuel (carbs) + Nerve impulse +O2
Necessities for Combustion
• Oxygen
– is the most limiting factor for performance.
– Is transported to the muscle by the blood.
– transport is interrupted by muscle contraction
(mush like stepping on a hose.)
Aerobic Contraction
• Muscle contraction with oxygen.
• Muscle contracts for a short time and then
relaxes long enough in between contractions
allowing blood (O2) into the muscle.
Aerobic Contraction
• Examples: ???
Anaerobic Contraction
• Muscle contraction without oxygen.
• Muscle contracts long enough to prevent O2
transport to the muscle cells.
OR
• Muscle contracts and relaxes too fast to allow
blood (O2) to muscle cells.
Anaerobic Contraction
• Examples: ???
– Long contraction …
– Very rapid contraction …
Anaerobic Contraction
Oxygen Debt
• Oxygen wasn’t available during anaerobic
contraction so it must be paid back (panting)
Anaerobic Contraction
Waste Products
• Heat – sweat
• CO2 – breathe out
• Lactic Acid – in muscle
– Inhibits muscle contraction
– Causes the “burn” during exercise
– Contributes to soreness
– Aerobic exercise the next day increases circulation of blood to
muscles and carries away lactic acid. Soreness will be relieved
more quickly.
Aerobic vs. Anaerobic Contraction
Activity (12 pts)
• Groups of 3-4 max
• Develop an activity to demonstrate the
difference between aerobic and anaerobic
contraction including all effects. Five facts
must be stressed.
• Audience: sixth grade students
• Puzzles, games, demos, etc. (No lectures)
Activity Scoring
12 points
____ (1 pt) Did all the group members actively
participate?
____ (5 pts) Were five facts about aerobic and
anaerobic activity expressed?
____ (2 pts) Was the information given accurate
and understandable?
____ (1 pt) Were all the participants audible?
____ (1 pt) Was the activity original and creative?
____ (2 pts) Were all group members good
audience members when not performing?
