All Pet Care Hospital: Dental Care Planning Guide for Your Pet
Assess-Treat-Prophylaxis (ATP)
A "dental" for your pet is much more than a tooth cleaning for a human! Under
anesthesia, we assess each tooth & treat periodontal, endodontal, and oral disease.
We often perform preventative measures from fluoride treatment to sealant to
perio packing to prevent problems. Ultrasonic cleaning and polishing under
anesthesia is recommended - usually once a year for Stage 1-2 Periodontal
Disease and every 6 months for Stage 3-4 Periodontal Disease.
Tooth Brushing
Daily tooth brushing is your #1 periodontal disease prevention! The mechanical
action of daily brushing, combined with the enzymatic action of a pet toothpaste
provide excellent results. If performed daily, brushing can remove up to 1
millimeter of plaque below the gum line and can resolve established gingivitis.
Be sure to use non-toxic pet toothpaste.
Poryphomonas "Perio" Vaccine
Of the ten major mouth bacteria, this vaccine kills and prevents the 4 main players.
Every dog over the age of one should have this shot series to prevent periodontal
disease. Research shows 75% of dogs have periodontal disease by age 3. So
when did it start? When they were 1-2 years old! This vaccine is given in an
inital series of 2, separated 3 weeks apart, and then annually. The vaccine is
technically a bacterin - vaccine against bacteria - so sometimes the injection site
is sore for 1-2 days.

Hill's Prescription Diet T/D "Tooth Diet"
Hill's T/D food fibers "squeegee" the plaque and bacteria off the teeth as your
pet chews. This mechanical action is second to brushing in tooth cleaning effectivemness. The Veterinary
Oral Health Care Council recognizes Hill's T/D as the only complete diet to have a significant
effect on plaque, calculus & gingivitis. Plus, Hill's T/D has a 100% taste guarentee! Your pet
will like it or you can return the remainder for full credit!
CET Chews
CET Chews are digestible rawhide for dogs that contain a dual-enzyme system to reduce plaque. The
chewing action also provides a slight abrasive mechanical cleaning to the teeth. For cats, there's a spongy
Chewie made from freeze-dried fish & containing the dual enzyme system. Cat owners have found a
significant reduction in gingivitis for those cats that receive even just one Chewie a day.
Maxi-Guard Oral Cleansing Gel
This all-natural gel works because the Zinc and Vitamin C inhibit oral bacteria and plaque formation. Once
mixed, it keeps for 6 months at room temperature and a year in the fridge. A small amount on your finger
and rubbed on the molars daily is all it takes. Use a small amount, the zinc and Vitamin C in large globs
can taste bad to some pets.
CET Aquadent Oral Solution
Add 1 teaspoon to a medium bowl of your pet's water daily. Aquadent works because it contains
Chlorhexidine, an antiseptic that kills mouth bacteria and promotes healthy gums. Think of it like
mouthwash for pets.
VetriScience Perio Support Powder
Sprinkle 1 teaspoon over your cat or dog's meal. This all-natural powder helps control plaque formation &
supports gum health.
Natural zeolites, cranberry, yucca, taurine, zinc, lactobacillis, enterocuccus, anise oil, aspergillus, etc. work
together.
OraVet Barrier Sealant
Oravet adheres electrostatically over the surface of clean, dry teeth. There is a reduction in plaque and
tartar because the barrier prevents bacteria from adhering to the enamel. The sealant is first applied after a
full dental cleaning in the hospital. Then you start the weekly home care program 2 weeks later. Tooth
brushing & other dental care products work with OraVet.
