Department of Oncology, Radiology Diagnostics and
Therapy and Radiation Medicine

Staff of the Department: 4 Professors, 3 Associate Professors, 5 Assistant
Professors, 1 postgraduate student, 1 resident doctor, 1 laboratory assistant.
Department of Oncology, Radiology and Radiation Medicine was founded in
January 1983 on the basis of two courses – Oncology and Roentgenology with
Medical Radiology. Associate Professor I. T. Tsyliurik, MD was in charge of the
Roentgenology and Medical Radiology Course from 1960 to 1982. Associate
Professor M. V. Skybenko, MD was in charge of the Oncology course from 1970 to
1982. From 1983 Professor H. S. Moroz was in charge of the newly formed
Department of Oncology, Radiology and Radiation Medicine. In 1994-2006 the
Department was headed by Professor V.I. Dryzhak. Doctor of Medicine, Professor
I.Y. Galaychuk has been working as the Head of the Department since 2006.
Education
Students of Medical Faculty and Faculty of Dentistry, Institute of Nursing, as
well as doctors of the Faculty of Postgraduate Education get theoretical and practical
knowledge at the Department.
Teaching process is provided by highly skilled instructors on the following
subjects:

«Oncology» – for the 5th and 6th year students of Medical Faculty,
internship doctors and students of the Faculty of Postgraduate Education;

«Nursing in oncology» – for the nurses and nurses-bachelors of
intramural, extramural and distance-learning study programmes;

«Radiology» – for the 3d year students of Medical Faculty and the
Faculty of Dentistry, internship doctors of the Postgraduate Education Faculty;

«Radiation medicine» – for the 5th year students of Medical
Faculty and the 4th year students of the Faculty of Dentistry, internship doctors
and students of the Faculty of Postgraduate Education;

«Palliative medicine» – for the nurses with master’s degree of
Institute of Nursing.
Subjects are taught in Ukrainian, English and Russian languages for the
students of
Medical Faculty and the Faculty of Dentistry. Methodological
instructions for the subjects are written in three languages.

Research
Researches of the Department staff are aimed at improvement of diagnostics
and treatment of patients with malignant tumors of various localizations.
Since 2009 scientific and research work of the Department staff on the topic
“Optimization of lymphogenic metastases diagnostics and treatment modalities for
the patients with rectal cancer, breast cancer and skin melanoma” has been
accomplished.
The following scientific topics have been accomplished :

Role of B and C hepatitis viruses and other cause factors in
hepatocarcinogenesis;

Prevention and treatment of hepatic failure in patients with
obstructive jaundice of tumorous genesis;

Influence of laser therapy on body’s resistibility in combined
treatment of malignant tumors;

Study of antigenic, hormonal and immunologic status of patients
with malignant tumors of main localizations;

Development of united topographic and functional radionuclide in
vivo and in vitro methods for diagnostics and rehabilitation of patients with
tumors of chest and abdominal cavities;

Development of complex diagnostics of tuberculosis and lung
cancer on the basis of clinicoradiological, radionuclide, instrumental and
laboratory methods of diagnostics.
Main scientific achievements of the Department
For the years of Department’s existence its staff have prepared and defended 4

More than 300 scientific articles were published subsequent to the results of the
scientific researches, 15 patents for the inventions were received.
Clinical work
More than 20 percent of surgeries are performed by the specialists of the
Department. These are the most complicated surgeries on the abdominal cavity
organs and chest cavity organs, performed by the surgeons of the highest
qualification: Professors V. Dryzhak, H. Moroz, I. Halaychuk, Associate Professors
Y. Uglyar, M. Dombrovych and L. Shkrobot. They are also curators of the Regional
Oncological Dispensary Surgical Units, where clinical rounds are done on a weekly
basis, they hold conferences and conciliums. Assistants of the Department take an
active part in roentgenologic and ultrasound diagnostic examinations. Specialists of
the Department consult more than 1000 patients yearly; implement new methods of
diagnostics and treatment of patients.
International cooperation, conferences
The staff of the Department participated in organization of all-Ukrainian
theoretical and practical conferences on the basis of the University Congress Center
“Chervona Kalyna”:

2004 - Accompaning therapy in treatment of oncological patients;

2007 - Methods of preclinical diagnosis of regional lymphogenic
metastases;

2009 - Efficient chemotherapy for oncological patients.
