A New MAC for Wi-Fi based
Underground Networks

Porto - 1 April 2014
Context
• Emergent research field
• Myriad of applications:
• Sports/agricultural fields
• Mining facilities
• Border patrol
Motivation
•
•
•
•
Wireless networks can be easier to mantain and deploy than cable ones
Current MAC protocols don’t suit underground needs
IEEE 802.11 devices are cheaper than current alternatives (IEEE 802.15.4)
Focus on the U2A and A2U scenario

Objectives
• Review technologies, experiences and the fundamentals of signal
propagation through soil medium
• Study propagation model
• Identify where it is best to alter the MAC layer
• Chose and implement techniques according to priorities defined
• Test changes made through Packet Delivery Ratio, Delay and
Throughput
• Analyze results

Scenario

Proposed solution
• AMN sends beacon informing SN
• The first node to respond is selected as the UMN
• UMN broadcasts that it is available for data transfer
• Every SN in its reach informs how much data it has to transfer
• UMN adapts the NAV accordingly, so that transmission is in TDMA
fashion.
• Zero Collision [1]
• As proposed in [2]
• SNs transmit Data
• UMN forwards Data to AMN

Work done
• State of the art
• Definition of the sub-layer protocol messages
• Development of packet sockets routines (in progress)
