THEATER ARTS SYLLABUS: 5018 (Theater 8) Classen School of Advanced Studies Teacher: E-Mail: Michael Payne, NBCT- CTE/EAYA: Arts and Communication, M.Ed., B.F.A. [email protected] Classroom : C110 COURSE DESCRPITION: Theater Arts 5018 is a performance based course incorporating acting techniques, the role of the actor in interpreting dramatic literature, and an introduction to theater production. STUDENT(S) RESPONSIBLITIES: 1. Demonstrate expressive use of the body and voice. 2. Utilize acting concepts and theatrical terminology. 3. Utilize theater production concepts and skills. 4. Demonstrate an appreciation for theatrical events, both live and recorded. 5. Practice audience etiquette. Graded as a whole experience. COURSE CONTENT: PRODUCT AND PROCESS 1ST NINE WEEKS: 1. Play Analysis- Students will read and view Neil Simons, "Brighton Beach Memoirs." (film rated PG-13) 2. Design Element- Students will design a theater handbill program. 3. Acting Experience-Students will understand/demonstrate performance elements based in pantomime, improvisation and monologue treatment (comical and dramatic.) 2ND NINE WEEKS: 1. Play Analysis-Students will read and view Scott McPherson's, “Marvin's Room.” (film is rated PG-13) 2. Writing Forum-Students will write Reader’s Theatre scripts 3. Design Element-Students will design marketing postcards 4. Acting Experience-Students will rehearse and perform three reader’s theatre plays (one original and two from established playwrights) 3RD NINE WEEKS: 1. Play Analysis-Students will read and view, Lorraine Hansberry's, "A Raisin in the Sun." (film is rated PG) 2. Writing Forum-Students will write an Asian Shadow Play. 3. Design Element-Students will design shadow theatre sets and pawns. 4. Acting Experience-Students will rehearse and perform an original shadow play (one original and one from an established playwright.) 4TH NINE WEEKS: 1. Play Analysis-Students will read and view, "Hairspray." (film is rated PG-13) 2. Writing Forum-Students will write an original musical. 3. Design Element-Students will design all elements associated with a musical theatre portfolio (costumes, poster, program, etc.) 4. Acting Experience- Students will rehearse and perform original musicals. STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO: 1. Perform alone and in-groups. 2. Exhibit appropriate audience behavior. 3. Turn in required written work prior to performance. 4. Meet all assignment deadlines. 5. Participate in all class activities. 6. Take and pass tests (written and performance). 7. Keep a portfolio containing all assignments. 8. Read one published play every nine weeks, and complete specific design work. SUPPLIES: 1. A notebook with loose-leaf notebook paper. 2. 10 plastic savers. 3. 5 dividers. 4. Colored Pencils LATE WORK AND TUTORING: Assigned work is due 2 days after an excused absence. Individual or group performances will be made up with an alternative assignment or by scheduling an appointment with the instructor. The entire group must be present to make up group assignments.
