Adams Environmental Science Biomes Study Guide 1. What is a biome? A large region characterized by a specific climate, certain plants and animals 2. How does temperature and precipitation determine which plants grow in an area? The temperature and amount of rain affects plant diversity and size. 3. How does climate determine the characteristics of a biome? The temperature and precipitation determine what plants and animals live there. 4. What is latitude? In degrees from north to south 5. What is longitude? In degrees from east to west 6. What is altitude? Height of an object above sea level. 7. How does latitude and altitude affect the plants that grow in that area? They affect the precipitation of an area Vocabulary Vocabulary Definition Agriculture Occurring at an extreme rate in the rainforest. Tundra Located at the arctic or Antarctic, easily disturbed by human activities Adaptations Characteristics that help organisms survive Habitat The area in which an organism lives Prairie A flat area of land (Plains) that contains grazing animals Vegetation Plants including trees, flowers etc. that helps determine the biome Equator Imaginary line around Earth. Contains the greatest diversity of organisms Frozen layer of soil located in the tundra Permafrost Adams Environmental Science Biome Desert Savanna Chaparral Grasslands Tundra Rainforest Features Usually found on the dry side of the mountain Located Found in the in Africa, Mediterranean India, S. regions. America, Australia, long dry seasons and short we seasons. Located in the center of continents. Also called the prairie. Has a thin layer of soil called permafrost High humidity, and precipitation. Deforestation is a huge problem. Animals Usually burrow or only come out at night (nocturnal) Large herd grazing animals Deer, chipmunks animals that camouflage Grazing animals like bison, animals that burrow Usually migrate or hibernate during winter A variety of animals. Highest diversity on earth. Plants Succulent leaves, able to store water Can survive long periods without water. Can survive fire because small tissue can form new plants Soil has be destroyed by over plowing. Small shrubs Large trees and variety of plants
