Convention of Climate Change
and the Kyoto Protocol
• The Convention on Climate Change was entered into force on
March 21, 1994.
• The Kyoto Protocol was adopted on December 11, 1997, and
entered into force on February 16, 2005.
• The Doha Amendment to the Kyoto Protocol was adopted on
December 8, 2012.
• The Convention on Climate Change and the Kyoto Protocol are
international agreements.
• The Convention on Climate Changes sets and overall by setting standards for
governments such as gathering and sharing information on greenhouse gas
emissions, national policies, and best practices, launching national
strategies for addressing greenhouse gas emissions and adapting to
expected impacts, and cooperating in preparing for the adaptation to the
impacts of climate change. Emissions can be traded under the Kyoto
Protocol
• The Kyoto Protocol binds obligations on industrialized countries to reduce
emissions of greenhouse gases from 2008 to 2012. The Doha Amendment
accommodates the second commitment period between 2013 and 2020.
• The United Nations is responsible for the regulation and enforcement of the
United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Kyoto
Protocol
