Classroom/ Teacher Assistant

Teacher Assistant for any of West’s Art or Music Classes, or certain English classes you have
already taken like Theater I, II, and III, Multico, Mass Media, Writing for Publication, and
Dramatic Literature. West Yearbook or Regent Review would also be relevant.

Could also author a newsletter, magazine, or small journal for another West Department you have
an interest in to help educate the school on what they do.
Independent Study, Research, or Project
Ask English, Art, Music, or Theater Teachers for project ideas such as:
- Developing monologues to audition for theater schools with
- Rehearsing Musical Pieces to audition for music schools with
- Choreographing Dances in several different styles and write a paper on each of those genres
- Making a video or posters from digital media to promote a club or cause at West High School
- Complete writing or artwork pieces for a portfolio to apply to your selected college programs with
- Arranging an Art Show from yours and/or other West Student art work themed on a certain topic or cause.
Internship (paid or unpaid)/ Apprenticeship
-WKOW, WYOU, WORT, or a nearby media station close to West Hi on the soundboard, on-camera,
editing, researching information, calling sources of news stories, and more to learn about jobs in journalism
or radio/tv production
-Paradyme Productions or a nearby music studio if you already produce your own music and have musician
friends or friends with bands who want you in on their studio recording work
-Overture, Majestic, Barrymore, or other local theater assisting the stage, lighting, or sound crew on a
season of productions.
-Children’s Theater of Madison, Young Shakespearean Players, or other theater troupe in Madison assisting
the director, costume, or set designer on a season of productions.
-Elvejhum or other local art museum assisting curater in daily operations.
-Assist a local photographer, website developer, or digital media specialist with their work.
-Assist a dance instructor with setup, housekeeping, and demonstrating dance moves in classes at Kehl,
West Side Performing Arts Center, Madison School of Ballet, or another Dance studio
Job Shadowing
- sound engineer at Paradyme Studios, WORT, The Majestic, Overture Center, or other Madison sound or
theatrical production space
- graphic designer at Planet Propaganda, Silverline Studios, or another graphic design firm
- actor/actress, director, or set/costume designer with the Children’s Theater of Madison or another theater
company in Madison
- reporter, editor, or writer for Madison Magazine, The Isthmus, Capital Times, or other Madison literary
sources
- camera person, editor, director, or anchor person at WMTV, Magic 98, or another Madison Radio or
Television Studio
- dance instructor at Kehl, West Side Performing Arts Center, or other Madison Dance Studio
Part-Time or Summer Work
- “gofer” or “grunt” work at WKOW, LIFE 102.5, or other local radio, television, or video production
studio
- use your photography, digital media, or website development skills to develop websites, take headshots,
or make a photo layout/portfolio for your friends or others who need a senior picture, photos for special
events, or are trying to develop their acting or modeling portfolio
- offer to sell your artwork at local stores or gift shops, or sell your artwork at your own table/booth at the
Art Fair on the Square, Farmer’s Market, or other opportunities
- teach guitar, dance, acting, or other skills you are advanced in to children
Volunteer/ Service
- Volunteer for WORT, WYOU, or other non-profit news stations
- Volunteer to help at The Elvejium, Overture Center, or other Madison art museum or theater
- Volunteer to teach children theater, dance, or voice/music at your church, the Boys and Girls Club,
MSCR, Young Shakespearean Players, or anywhere needed that services children
- Volunteer to perform instrumental music or sing at special events, nursing homes, or local establishments
- do a documentary on a local issue of importance for airing on WYOU or other local film festival or
related classes
- Producing, directing, or arranging a show or performance using West’s (Fine and Performing) Art
Students to raise money for a charity or cause.
