Harmonics and Flicker Analysis in a Three phase Arc Furnace Electrical Power Systems Amarjeet Singh1 Email id: [email protected] Dept. Of Electrical & Electronics Engg SMS Lucknow Ravindra Kumar Singh2 Email id: [email protected] Dept. Of Electrical Eng MNNIT Allahabad Abstract - An electric arc furnace is a highly non-linear, time-varying load which gives rise to harmonics, Interharmonics and voltage flicker and voltage fluctuation. The harmonics are mainly related to the non-linear voltage-current characteristic of the arc while the voltage fluctuations are due to the arc length changes that occur during the melting of the scrap. The current and voltage harmonic distortion leads to several problems in electrical power systems, namely incorrect operation of devices, premature ageing of equipments, additional losses in transmission and distribution electrical networks, overvoltages and overcurrents. This paper presents the accurate evaluation of harmonics and flicker produced by ac electric arc furnaces and its propagation through transmission and distribution systems in the electric network. The perturbations caused by electric arc furnaces are of random nature and encompass a frequency range from DC to a few hundreds of Hz. Depending on whether AC of DC is used to supply the electric arc furnace there are unbalances, harmonics, inter-harmonics or voltage flicker in the frequency range between 0-30Hz. It is presented a typical case where a high voltage system supplies an electric arc furnace. The electrical network is simulated using MATLAB where a non-linear time-varying three-phase arc model is implemented . Keywords: Arc Furnace Modeling, MATLAB Simulation, Harmonics, Flicker.
