Week 14 Tip: I hope you all did well on your Bio exam; however, EXAM 4 is NEXT WEEK! I know that came up on us fast
but don’t worry we are almost done. I know you are probably pooped from bio, but I encourage you all to start early.
The best way to succeed on this exam is practice… PrAcTiCe! PRACTICE!@!

Naming Coordination Compounds
1. The cation is named before the anion
2. Ligands are named before metal ions
3. For ligand “o” is added to the root name of an anion. For neutral ligands the name of the
molecules is used with exceptions
4. The prefix: di, tri, etc., are used to denote the number of simple ligands. The prefixes bis,
tris, tetrakis are used for more complicated ligands that already contain di, tri, etc.
5. The oxidation state of the central metal ion is designated by roman numerals
6. Ligands are named alphabetically (ignore the prefix)
7. Of the complex ion has a negative charge, the suffix “-ate” is added to the name of the
metal. Sometimes Latin names are used to identify the metal.
