EXCURSIONS IN THE NATURE PARK OF
SASSO DI SIMONE
ONE DAY EXCURSION
1.a The Refuge of Trabocchetto: Pleasant walk which starts in
the gardens of Cavillano, a health resort 950 metres above sea
level and which continues along fields of flowers right up to an old
beech-wood. After the wood the landscape becomes spectacular as
the path goes along the edge of Monte Carpegna, rising gently. The
sea is an almost permanent backdrop during the walk. You walk
past the refuge of Trabocchetto. After a while you reach the top
which you can walk the length of. The secret hidden in this track is
to carefully study the landscape which can reveal much of its
history.
2.a The Trabocchino Pass: repeats some of the route of the
previous walk but once the top of M. Carpegna has been reached,
you go up the hill of Trabocchino and then go down into the town of
Carpegna passing spectacular rocks and green pine-woods. The
secret hidden in this path lies in the relationship between human
activity and the arboreal specimens of this mountain.
3.a The waterfall path: starts from the refuge of Cavillano and
goes straight down to the valley of the Conca torrent. The path
follows the river and takes us, through fields and past waterfalls to
the plains of M.Carpegna. The secret hidden in this place lies in the
1
relationship between microclimates and the diverse arboreal
specimens of the place
4.a Ranco del Cerro: The walk starts from the Passo Cantoniera
and goes through the large forest of Sasso amid tall Turkey oaks
and beeches. The walk alternates between thick woodland and wide
clearings up to the saddle of the two stones, where it winds along
huge limestone rocks. From here we go up to the prairies of Sasso
di Simone. The secret hidden in this place concerns the concept of
ecological succession as a flowing of the environment towards a
perfect woodland.
HALF DAY EXCURSIONS
1b. The plains of the Hermitage: the walk starts from the
Hermitage of the Madonna del Faggiosi and goes smoothly up to
the higher plains which can be walked their entire length. A
splendid landscape can be admired during the entire walk. The
secret hidden in this wonderful place is the variegated birdlife that
populates it.
2b. Sasso Simone : A walk starting from Case Barboni and going
to the prairies of Sasso di Simone through woods and past fossilrich rocks. In the topmost prairies of these strange stones, whose
shapes recall the mountain of Uluru held sacred by the Australian
aborigines, the flora is varied and abundant. The secret hidden in
this path lies in the relationship between human activities and the
area.
3b. The mushroom path: The walk starts from San Sisto and
reaches the Fosso Seminico. During the walk huge blocks of fossilrich limestone can be seen. Beyond there is the Turkey oakwood
with its tall trees and pleasant grassy clearings where several kinds
2
of mushrooms abound. The secret hidden in this path lies in the
relationship between the environment and the world of mushrooms.
