2017 Fringe Submissions – Studio (aka the Performance Salon)
The Basement is pleased to invite submissions from independent companies
and practitioners to be part of their 2017 Studio Fringe programme.
The Basement is planning a curated programme as part of the Auckland Fringe 2017 - and you
will need to apply to be part of the programme.
In the Studio, we will set the stage for a performance salon, where works of all kinds can pop up
around people as they lounge and imbibe. This will be a place of discovery - where audiences
watch as new performance is tested and evolved. While pieces will generally range in length from
20mins to an hour, there could be the odd durational or mini experience. Audience will wander in
and out, and something will always be on - with music, projection, games and activities filling in
the gaps between performances. The atmosphere will be of a summer speakeasy, with hints of
the occult and illicit investigations. We are open to exploring a number of options for the way
that this room works, including tickets, pay what you will, or anything else that we come up with
as a group.
We want the creation and layout of this space to be a collaboration with you, the artists. The
venue arrangements we can offer will depend on how the structure and model of Fringe 2017
evolves (on the back of our discussions with you) but will continue to incorporate the same
values and outcomes that our usual risk-share model strives for, promoting artistic risk while
reducing financial pressure on artists. We will confirm this as we begin to make formal offers for
a place in our programme in Sep-Oct.
The Deadline for Basement proposals is Monday 12th September. We will then come back to you
by the 23rd September to let you know if you have been accepted and to offer you a time slot.
THE VENUE:
Basement Theatre is Auckland’s culture-defining powerhouse - home to an artistic mixtape of the
performing arts since 2008. The venue showcases new and local voices, featuring 80% world
premieres and over 50% New Zealand work in its programme. The Basement’s unique risk-share
model supports emerging artists by reducing their financial risk, taking a percentage of box office
sales in lieu of a venue hireage fee. In a world where everything is downloadable, The Basement
is the place to see something live.
"The beating heart of Auckland Theatre." – Winner of Best Theatre, Metro Magazine, 2014.
SUBMISSION CRITERIA:
- We are calling for fringy works from 20mins to 1hr in length, durational or a mini experience
between longer works.
- We want the most experimental, avant-garde, new performance work out there!
- We will be programming Tuesday 21 February - Saturday 11 March, 2017
The Cost
We want to work with you, the artist, to come up with the best model for this Fringe season e.g.
pay what you will. Whatever we decide on we will continue to incorporate the same values and
outcomes that our usual risk-share model strives for, promoting artistic risk while reducing
financial pressure on artists. We will provide the following support for any show programmed in
the studio:
- Rostra & seating
- Lighting and Sound equipment
- Technical support for your pack in and out of the venue
- Hire which covers rent, power and water
- Bar staff available for the duration of your show
- Box office staff for the duration of your show
- Your season publicized through entertainment listings and The Basement website, Facebook and
Twitter
- Your event featured in The Basement’s Mail out to database
- An Operator for your season and a basic lighting design
Things to think about:
– you will most likely only have a matter of an hour to
access the space and tech your show with the operator in the venue – there will be NO rehearsal
time in the venue so your show needs to be performance ready by the time you get into The
Basement. As we want to keep the Performance Salon rolling with performances please
understand that shows can’t be too technically heavy for this space. You will have minimal
control of the space so complicated sets and lighting potentially won’t work, but you can go crazy
with costumes and props. We are interested in supporting mixed media works e.g. projection
happening in this space.
ch night and you may only have 15 minutes or less to
pack your set in and out for each performance.
rage – with many companies using the space at once we will be very limited for storage
space for your set/props etc.
register for the fringe, registrations open on 12th September.
