Curtain Theatre Takes on Twelfth Night in its Eighth Summer Season
Antebellum South is Setting for Steamy Love Story
MILL VALLEY, Calif.—The Curtain Theatre, Mill Valley’s own company of
Shakespeare players, has chosen the bard’s comedy Twelfth Night for its eighth summer
production in Old Mill Park.
Twelfth Night tells the story of Viola, a young woman shipwrecked in the country of
Illyria who decides to dress as a man to make her make her way in the new land. She
comes to serve the lovesick Count Orsino in his courtship of Lady Olivia, who instead
falls for the fetching young go-between. Along the way, we met Sir Toby Belch and
other riotous court characters, as well as that officious steward, Malvolio.
This production, set in the antebellum South, promises to be a sultry, steamy
gumbo of colorful costumes and lively music. It features many cast members from last
year’s production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, an all-time hit for the company that
played to record houses.
The Curtain Theatre is dedicated to putting on the world’s best plays in one of the
Bay Area’s most beautiful settings. Its outdoor productions, in an amphitheater nestled
among redwoods, are designed to appeal to all ages, and first-time viewers as well as
Shakespeare buffs.
The group’s artistic director is Susannah Rose Woods, a veteran of the Bay Area
theater scene. The productions make heavy use of traditional and original music,
arranged by Don Clark, using instruments that include fiddle, concertina, flute, guitar
and mandolin.

Kleen; Chris Libby; Geof Libby; Christopher Maikish; Bobby Mercer; Julia

Twelfth Night will run Saturdays and Sundays, from August 4-26. Shows start at 2

in Old Mill Park, which is at 375 Throckmorton Ave. Admission is free, but donations
are accepted.
