Students will use technology, critical thinking, and creativity to produce & create advertising campaigns for a tribute or item. (NOTE: When using with Mockingjay, students can reproduce the rebel propos. See my extensive lesson for the propos here.) The lesson can be tied into a lesson on propaganda, researching real examples of propaganda in today’s world and in history. For example, a tie-in to World War II is the use of propaganda by Adolf Hitler and the Nazi party to promote the Holocaust. (Read more here.) Included in the lesson is a handout for students, graphic organizer for listing tribute gifts (very few are known, so students could debate which gifts they think tributes received), and a sample grading rubric. RUBRIC is just a sample; you can use your own criteria to fit your students’ needs. Super Bowl Connection Use the commercials aired during the super bowl to jump-start a discussion on marketing of your product. Have students study the different techniques in propaganda (glittering generalities, transfer, testimonial, plain folks, card stacking, band wagon, and name calling) and pick them out in different commercials. More information on each: http://mason.gmu.edu/ ~amcdonal/Propaganda%20Techniques.html Use the handout on page 5 for student to record the propaganda technique and the characteristics that identify it as such. For example videos, here is my super bowl commercials playlist on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL9284FCC69A39F426 Known Gifts Received The Hunger Games Katniss (District 12): burn ointment, bread (from district 11), broth (for/shared with Peeta), sleep syrup (to give to Peeta), Capitol medicine (for Peeta), lamb stew dinner (shared with Peeta) Peeta (District 12): broth (via Katniss), sleep syrup (via Katniss), Capitol medicine (via feast at Cornucopia, retrieved by Katniss), lamb stew dinner (shared with Katniss) Cato (District 2): Capitol body armor (via feast at Cornucopia, stolen by Thresh & retrieved after killing Thresh) Catching Fire Katniss (District 12): spile, anti-inch (herbal) cream Finnick (District 4): 1 loaf of district 4 bread Beetee (District 3): 72 district 3 rolls Remaining allied tributes (Peeta, Katniss, Finnick, Johanna, Beetee): sauce for the oysters (on last day, or day 3 in the arena) Visit My Online Store for additional English/Language Arts activities and lessons, including all my Hunger Games-related lessons.
