The bumblebee queen is the bee that hibernates.
The make bee is called a drone.
Only female bees sting.
The queen bee is the female bee that mates and lays eggs.
Insects:
1. A drone fly is an insect that mimics bees.
2. Nectar is the sweet liquid that flowers use to attract insects.
3. One quarter of all the animals in the world are beetles.
4. Insects have three body parts.
5. The praying mantis is long and narrow and well camouflaged that is could be mistaken
for a twig.
6. Grubs are beetle larvae. Nymphs are young insects that look like adults.
7. A bug cannot chew its food.
8. Insects move from one place to another with the changing of seasons when they
migrate.
9. Mimicry is when harmless insects resemble harmful insects for their protection.
Flowers:
1. The ragweed plant resembles the goldenrod. The pollen of the ragweed can cause hay
fever.
2. The thistle has prickly leaves and stem but also has a fragrant purple flower head.
3. The black-eyed Susan looks like a daisy with yellow ray flowers and brown disk flowers.
4. The aster is an autumn flower that has more than one flower head per stem.
5. The daisy reminds us of an eye because it closes at night and opens at dawn.
Know:
1. Insects seem to disappear in the late fall because some die, some hibernate, some migrate and
some live in the hive.
2. A food chain usually begins with a green plant because green plants can make their own food. A
food chain is a series of plants and animals, each depending on the next for food. Each food
chain contains predators. A predator is an animal that captures and feeds on other animals.
Be able to identify/ label a bumblebee, honeybee, and yellow jacket.
Be able to identify/ label a true bug, bee, butterfly, fly, spider, and beetle.
