Inventory, Monitoring, Research Catalog 10/25/13 1. Topic Invertebrate Species of Uncertain Origin 2. Background There are a handful of resident and non- resident invertebrate species that are unidentified, undescribed, and or are of uncertain origin on UH managed lands on Mauna Kea. No information is available regarding their extent, abundance, behavior, and positive identification. 3. Purpose Determine unidentified invertebrate species, identify species to the lowest practical taxonomic level, determine origins of uncertain species, describe unidentified species (if not previously described) and identify potential threats to natural and cultural resources on Mauna Kea. 4. Research Objectives Establish a list of unidentified invertebrate species on UH managed lands, identify and describe unknown species, and identify threats. 5. Management Applications Potential uses of Resident Invertebrate Species of Uncertain Origin could: help inform land managers of threats, help to understand components of the ecosystem, and identify effective management strategies. 6. Comprehensive Management Plan (and Sub-Plans) Applicability a. Priority –to be completed b. NRMP Source – Section 2.2-33 7. Desired Outcomes Determine descriptions, identifications, and origins of unknown invertebrates including unidentified Staphylinidae, Hydrophilidae, Moth fly (Psychoda), Phoridae, Sciaridae, Ichneumonidae, micro-hymenoptera, and mites (families: Bdellidae, Laelapidae, Phytoseidae). Life history studies of Lycosa spider and Agrotis(moth) Technical report summarizing project purpose, methods, results, etc. Identify management recommendations to address any existing or potential resource impacts. Provide a baseline data set suitably documented and formatted for us by other researchers and management authority. Prepared by: J.Kirkpatrick
