Below is a basic framework for your problem-solution speeches. I have not
provided all of the data that you will need in your own sub-subpoints, making
reference only the fact that in the sub-subpoints is where the data goes. I have
also not gone into detail on the solution data, offering, once again, a framework
for illustrating how your outlines should look.

Doctors Need to Practice More Than Just Medicine
Attention Getter: The hip bone may be connected to the back bone,
and the back bone connected to the neck bone,
and the neck bone connected to the head bone,
but when it comes to doctors’ communication with
patients, the head and heart, and the mouth and
the ears are rarely connected.
Adaptation:
As we grow older it would be nice to deal with doctors
who know how to talk to us as people rather than
simply as cases and body parts.
Thesis:
Medical Schools should require communication
competency before awarding students their medical
degree.
Preview:
I. Doctors cannot communicate effectively
II. Medical schools should require communication
courses

outline.)

Conclusion
At a time when we are most vulnerable and in need of meaningful
communication, our unavoidable times of illness, we are and will
continue to be too often confronted with doctors who are ineffective
communicators, bad listeners, and horrible instruction givers.
Something must be done. By requiring communication courses
before students are awarded their medical degrees, medical schools
can take a significant step towards ameliorating this continuing
problem, and thereby give each of us a chance to talk with a doctor
who is clear and listen. It is then that the head and heart, the ear and
the mouth will be connected.
See NOTES on next page
You notice that there is both a general introduction and a general conclusion.
You must have these for the overall group presentation. I recommend one of you
do the intro and the other the conclusion.
Your individual speeches must also have an introduction and conclusion tailored
to your particular speech (as in the problem main point or the solution main point)
In these introductions you DO NOT need an adaptation statement since the
relevance of the topic will be made known to us in the general introduction.
Do not think you cannot have any more than four (4) subpoints. I just stopped
there because these subpoints addressed the critical problems. It may be that
you have five (5) sub’s or three (3), depending on how much you develop each
point. But do notice that each point needs two (2) pieces of evidence. NOTE: do
not simply list DATA on your outline. I have the DATA there as a label for what is
supposed to be placed in that location. So, you would insert your actual data.
You also see data under the solutions section of the outline. That is because
none of us (me included) are experts on your topics. So we have no credibility in
terms of proposing our own solutions. Thus, your proposed solutions must be
based on what the experts say and that must be cited.
Finally, do not type “transition to final speaker” on your turned-in outline. I put that
sentence fragment there as direction for what you must insert into your outline
and do in your speech. Thus, following the internal summary for your individual
presentation, you will insert the statement you will use to transition to the next
speaker.
